It's January, and that means it's time for the NAMM show. It's a convention in Anaheim, California, where musical instrument manufacturers show their new products... kind of like a stadium-sized music store. I'll be going this year to unveil some new signature models with Ibanez, as well as doing autograph sessions for Ernie Ball strings, TC Electronic pedlas, and Majik Box pedals. I always see lots of friends there... It's like a giant family reunion of musicians and the people who make the gear. I know that some of the people from this site will be there, so I look forward to meeting you in person!

Thank you,

Paul

Here I am at the Marshall booth, hanging out with Juan Alderete, bassist from The Mars Volta. I know Juan better as John Alderete from Racer X. (Check out John/Juan's Racer X baseball cap!)

I also shot some promo videos for TC Electronic's new Ditto Looper X2, had a fantastic jam session with Martin Taylor (jazz fingerstyle teacher at ArtistWorks, and all-around legend), and saw lot of my friends from the music business.

I plan on going to NAMM for the next two days, so more news to come...

NAMM Friday

Today I had the great pleasure of announcing the release of my 25th anniversary Ibanez signature model guitar. I went to the Ibanez booth and talked about the guitar, and also about my previous models, and my many enjoyable years as an Ibanez endorser. I did a short video interview for a writer from Guitar Player magazine, and then went to visit Larry DiMarzio at his suite in a nearby hotel. The NAMM show can be a noisy place, and Larry likes to do his business in a peaceful environment. His room is always a oasis from the noise of NAMM, and it's fun to talk about guitars and pickups with him as well. My last stop was at the Majik Box booth. They make my "Fuzz Universe" pedal, and there was a long line of people waiting for me for autographs and photos. On the way to leave the show, I saw the Empress Effects booth, so I stopped there to thank them for making my favorite parametric EQ pedal.

The drive home took two hours. Friday night in L.A. is busy! I invited Freddie Nelson to my house for dinner, and my wife, Emi, cooked some delicious Japanese food for us. Freddie is a fantastic singer, and also a good friend, so we had a great time eating and talking.

More NAMM adventures tomorrow!

The NAMM show is a great place to see friends from the music business. Today I saw Steve Morse, Allan Holdsworth, Uli Roth, and Nuno Bettencourt. I stopped by the Ernie Ball Booth to sign autographs, visited Ibanez to see my new guitar again, went to Larry DiMarzio's hotel suite to escape the din of NAMM for a few minutes, and then jumped back into the chaos to do some jamming with my fellow Artistworks teachers, Jeannie Deva and Howard Levy.

Jeannie, Howard, and I jumped right into a blues jam, and I was blown away at how great both of them are. We had some musical "conversations" where I would play a phrase, and then let them respond to it. Both Jeannie and Howard could copy and embellish anything that I played. They are amazing players, and also fantastic listeners.

After three days of the NAMM show, I am truly exhausted! I celebrated tonight with a good Japanese dinner, and am looking forward to some sleep and recovering on Sunday. I'll be back here next week, to listen to new Video Exchanges and see how everyone is doing.

Thank you,

Paul

I grew up in Greensburg, Pennsylvania... a small town, where a visit from a famous musician was a rare event. But on Feb. 2nd, 1982, Randy Rhoads came for a whole day of guitar clinics at a music store in Greensburg. Of course I went to one of the clinics, and the photo above was taken when I was standing in line (upper left, in the photo) and waiting to get an autograph from Randy.
