Going to Italy!

Hey friends,

I'm headed to Genoa, Italy tomorrow (May 7) along with David Grier and Pat Flynn.  We're going to eat some wonderful food, learn and practice some music, eat, play some shows, and eat some amazing food. Any AW'ers in the vicinity can check with http://www.beppegambetta.com/calendar.htm

Suffice it to say, I'll be "out of the office" for 8 days.  I'm uploading a batch of VEs I did earlier in the week.  There are a few I couldn't get to but those will certainly be first when I get back.

I'd suggest we keep VE submissions to a minimum over the next week as to keep the backlog manageable.

I'll try to get a video message together at some point so you folks can hear some tunes.

Grazi!

Hey all,

Hoping all is great & that u're having a nice start of the summer season so far. Here is a lil update on some new songs releases I've had lately.

The Korean girl group Red Velvet released their new single "Would U" a few weeks ago. I co-wrote this one w Simon Petren & Team Oreo and the music video has almost 5,5 mil views on

Youtube so far. This is a motown-inspired song with quite interesting chord changes & melody.

Red Velvet also released an acoustic live version on YT which is worth checking out as well:

On the Japanese charts I recently had a lead single with rock group FTISLAND from their new album, which went Nr 1 on the Japanese chart.

I rarely do heavy rock songs but it was a fun co-write together with one of the band members & his team.

ArtistWorks Live: Talking Dobro with Andy Hall

In our latest episode of ArtistWorks Live, we were joined by our Dobro (and lap steel guitar) teacher Andy Hall. We talked about everything from how he got his start playing music (which includes a long-haired heavy metal phase we have picture proof of), touring with the Infamous Stringdusters (and how he finds time to keep up with his students), playing while singing, how to get a clean tone, and more. Plus there’s plenty of deep Dobro talk for the pickers, as well as some nice Dobro playing from Andy. He tells a great story about earning the good graces of Earl Scruggs (and getting invited to the coveted annual birthday jam).

It’s a lot of fun as always and hosted by ArtistWorks’ own Director of Operations, John Graves. We do these once a month live with one of our teachers and anyone with a 12 month membership can tune in live to ask questions. It’s always different because frankly, nothing is planed. We like to keep the conversation casual and see what kind of questions are asked in the comment box. You never know where things will go. Stay tuned for another one coming next month!

You must learn to walk before you learn to run. When it comes to flatpicking, you must first learn your scales before learning to shred.

Learning some of the commonly used scales is a critical step towards advancing your skills as a bluegrass guitarist. As with any instrument, it's very important to make sure that you're taking your time with the basics before moving onto more complicated techniques and theories. Let’s go over some essential guitar scales you will want to learn early on before moving on to the more advanced concepts.

With some of these basic bluegrass guitar scales under your belt, you'll have a great foundation to build on when it comes to playing leads and improvising.

Avoid Guitar Finger Cramps

classical guitar stretches

Do you fingers ever cramp up or hurt while playing guitar? You're not alone, especially if you play classical guitar.

For many guitarists, avoiding finger cramps is a way of life. For classical players, the very nature of the instrument puts you at risk. Proper form requires extending your left hand fingers to their limits and rapidly plucking with your right hand. After awhile it can start to hurt a lot if you're not careful!

Here's some tools to help you minimize and hopefully avoid getting finger cramps as you're practicing all those classical guitar Sor studies in the curriculum here. If you take some time to incorporate these into your practice routine, it should help to at least alleviate the temporary pain and also it can prevent more serious injuries down the road.
