[MUSIC]
Now let's run through arpeggios.
These are the most common
chords found in jazz music.
To give you a really good foundation,
just to start running these sounds,
basically,
below thumb position, we're gonna stay.
So, let's start with
the ones starting on E.
And we're gonna start with E major seven,
so remember E
[MUSIC]
third, G-sharp is the major third,
[MUSIC]
fifth and then major seven
[MUSIC].
Then on top of that, remember we
talked about in our theory class,
E major with the nine and
the 11, the plus 11.
[MUSIC]
That's root,
third, fifth,
major seven,
nine, plus 11.
That's E, G-sharp, B,
D-sharp, F-sharp, A-sharp.
Now E minor 11.
[MUSIC]
Nice sound root.
Flat three, five, seven and
it's a flat at seven cause
it's a minor seven, right?
Nine which is in F-sharp and
an A is the 11
[MUSIC].
Then there's the minor seven,
flat five with the nine, and the 11.
[MUSIC]
Then there's
the E augmented.
Remember the augmented?
It's all major thirds.
E, G-sharp, C, E, G-sharp.
[MUSIC]
Then there
is E diminished.
All minor thirds.
[MUSIC]
E, G, B-flat,
D-flat, E.
Let me repeat a little bit of it,
the G and the B-flat again.
[MUSIC]
Then our friend E seven [LAUGH].
Root, third, five, flat seven,
[MUSIC].
Then we can also have an E seven with
a nine, and a plus 11, remember that?
[MUSIC]
We did these with the keyboard, so
you can hear the sounds a little bigger,
but it's important to be able to,
[MUSIC]
to play them on the bass.
It'll help us in our improvising,
it'll help us when we have to come up
with bass lines that outline these sounds,
and it'll help us hear the sound better.
We can practice even away from the piano.
Now let's go to F and
we'll do the same thing.
F major seven.
[MUSIC]
Then F major seven with the plus 11 and
the nine.
F major seven was F, A, C, E.
Now it's F, A, C, E, G, B
[MUSIC]
that's F major seven with a nine and
a plus eleven.
[MUSIC]
The G is the nine and
the B is the plus eleven.
[MUSIC]
Now F minor nine with the eleven.
[MUSIC]
F, A-flat,
C, E flat, G, B-flat.
[MUSIC]
Then F minor seven with the nine and
the 11 with a flat five.
Remember we talked about half-diminished.
[MUSIC]
F, A-flat, B natural,
E-flat, G, B-flat.
[MUSIC]
Then F augmented,
all major thirds.
[MUSIC]
F, A, C-sharp, F, A.
[MUSIC]
F, A,
C sharp, F, A.
[MUSIC]
And F diminished.
F, A-flat, B,
D, F, A-flat,
B
[MUSIC].
F seven, F, A,
C, E-flat
[MUSIC].
Then F seven with the nine and plus 11.
[MUSIC]
F, A, C, E-flat, G, B.
[MUSIC]
That's one, three, five,
flat seven, nine plus 11.
[MUSIC]
Okay now we're up to F-sharp.
F-sharp major seven, one, three, five,
and major seven
[MUSIC].
Now the major seven with
the nine plus eleven
[MUSIC].
That's F-sharp, A-sharp, C-sharp, E-sharp
[MUSIC].
G-sharp
[MUSIC]
and that's a B-sharp, or
you can think of it as a C natural
[MUSIC].
Now, the F-sharp minor nine,
with the eleven
[MUSIC].
F-sharp, A, C-sharp, E, G-sharp, B.
[MUSIC]
Then the F-sharp half-diminished
seven with the or minor seven flat five
they call it, with the nine and the 11.
[MUSIC]
F-sharp A, C,
E, G-sharp, B.
[MUSIC]
Then F-sharp augmented.
[MUSIC]
F-sharp, A-sharp,
D, F-sharp, A-sharp.
[MUSIC]
And finally, F-sharp diminished.
[MUSIC]
All minor thirds,
F-sharp, A, C, E-flat,
F-sharp, A, C.
[MUSIC]
Experiment with
some fingerings.
When you have something like a diminished,
it's all minor thirds.
So you can sort of look
around the bass and
see how those,
[MUSIC]
experiment with those.
I lied, F-sharp seven, root,
third, fifth, flat seven.
[MUSIC]
And then F-sharp seven with a nine and
a plus 11.
[MUSIC]
F-sharp, A-sharp,
C-sharp, E, G-sharp, C.
[MUSIC]
Okay, G major seven.
[MUSIC]
Root, third, fifth and major seven.
[MUSIC]
Now with the nine and the plus 11.
[MUSIC]
That's G, B, D, F-sharp, A, C-sharp.
[MUSIC]
Now G minor nine, with the 11.
[MUSIC]
That's G, B-flat, D, F, A, C.
[MUSIC]
Now G half-diminished.
[MUSIC]
G, B-flat, D-flat, F, A, C.
[MUSIC]
G, B-flat,
D-flat, F, A, C.
[MUSIC]
That's the minor seven,
flat five with the nine and the 11.
Now augmented, G augmented.
[MUSIC]
G, B, D-sharp, G, B.
[MUSIC]
Augmented.
[MUSIC]
That's all major thirds, G, B,
D-sharp, G, B.
Now all minor thirds for G diminished.
[MUSIC]
G, B-flat, D-flat, E, G.
[MUSIC]
Now,
G seven.
[MUSIC]
One, three, five, flat seven, G, B, D, F.
Then with the ninth and the plus 11.
[MUSIC]
G, B, D, F, A, C-sharp.
[MUSIC]
[MUSIC].
A-flat major seven.
[MUSIC]
A-flat, C, E-flat, G.
[MUSIC]
Now, A-flat,
major 7 with the 9 and the plus 11.
[MUSIC]
Now A-flat minor 9 with the 11.
[MUSIC]
That's A-flat,
C-flat, E-flat, G-flat,
B-flat, D-flat
[MUSIC].
A flat, half diminished,
with the 9 and the 11
[MUSIC].
That's A-flat, C-flat, D-natural,
G-flat, B-flat, D-flat
[MUSIC].
Then A-flat augmented
[MUSIC].
A-flat C, E, A-flat, C, all major thirds.
Now, A-flat diminished
[MUSIC],
that's all minor thirds.
A-flat, C-flat, D-natural, F,
A-flat, C-flat, D-natural.
And our old friend A-flat 7,
root, III, V, flat VII.
Then with the 9 and the plus 11 added,
[MUSIC].
That's A-flat, C, E-flat,
G-flat, B-flat and D
[MUSIC].
A major 7,
[MUSIC],
A, C-sharp, E, and G-sharp
[MUSIC].
Now with the 9 and
the plus 11
[MUSIC].
That's A, C-sharp, E, G-sharp,
B, D-sharp or E-flat.
Then A minor 11.
A minor 11.
A, C, E, G,
B, D
[MUSIC].
That's a root, flat III,
V, minus VII, 9, and 11
[MUSIC].
Now, A half diminished with the 9 and
the 11,
[MUSIC].
A augmented, A, C-sharp, E-sharp,

[MUSIC].
That's B-flat, D, F, and A.
Now, B-flat major 7 with a 9 and
then plus 11.
B-flat, D, F, A, C, E-natural.
Check our pitch here
[MUSIC].
Now B-flat minor 9
with the 11
[MUSIC].
That's 1, 2, look at the fingering,
1, 4, 2, 4
[MUSIC].
Now, B-flat minor 7, 5,
5 with the 9 and the 11
[MUSIC].
E-flat, D-flat, E-natural,
A-flat, C, E-flat.
And then B-flat augmented.
B-flat, D, F-sharp,
E-flat, D-natural
[MUSIC].
And then B-flat diminished
[MUSIC].
That's all minor thirds.
B-flat, D-flat, E,
G, B-flat, D-flat, E, G.
Now, B-flat 7, root, third, fifth V7.
B-flat, D, F, A-flat.
Then the B-flat seven with 9 and
the plus 11,
[MUSIC].
That's B-flat, D, F,
A-flat, C, and E-natural.
Okay, B Major.
Root, three, five, major seven.
[MUSIC]
B, D-sharp, F-sharp, A-sharp.
Now we're going to do it with the 9 and
the plus 11
[MUSIC].
That's B, D-sharp, F-sharp,
A-sharp, C-sharp, and F
[MUSIC].
Then B minor 9
with the 11

B, D, F, G-sharp,
B, D, F
[MUSIC],
that's B diminished.
Then B 7.
Root 3, 5, flat 7.
B, D-sharp, F-sharp, A.
Then with the 9 and the plus 11
[MUSIC].
That's B, D-sharp, F-sharp,
A, C-sharp, F
[MUSIC].
[MUSIC]
[MUSIC]
Now we're going
to do C-major seven.
[MUSIC]
That's C, E, G, B.
[MUSIC]
Now we're going to do C-major seven with
the nine and plus 11.
[MUSIC]
That's C, E, G, B, D, F-sharp.
[MUSIC]
Now C-minor eleven.
[MUSIC]
C,

one-four,
[MUSIC]
the fingering.

[MUSIC]
Now C with the nine, and the plus 11.

D-flat, F-flat, A-flat,
C-flat, E-flat, G-flat.
[MUSIC]
Now D-flat minor seven,
flat five with the nine and the 11.
[MUSIC]
So it's D-flat,
you can call that E or F-flat,
G, C-flat, E-flat, G-flat.
[MUSIC]
Nice, that's a nice sound and
D-flat closed like that,
it has a warm sound.
D-flat augmented,
[MUSIC]
D-flat, C, A,
[MUSIC]
B-flat, F, A, D-flat, F.
[MUSIC]
All major thirds, D-flat, F, A, D-flat, F.
Then D-flat diminished.
[MUSIC]
That's D-flat, E, G,
B-flat, D-flat, E, G.
Then D-flat seven,
[MUSIC]
one, three, five, seven, flat seven,
now D-flat seven,
with the nine and the plus 11.
[MUSIC]
You're starting to get these sounds
in your ear by now, I'm sure.
[MUSIC]
Okay, D-major seven now,
D major seven.
[MUSIC]
Now, D-major seven with the plus 11.
[MUSIC]
So we got D, F-sharp,
A, C-sharp, E-natural,

[MUSIC]
Now D-minor, nine, 11.
[MUSIC]
That's D,
F, A, C, E, G.

[MUSIC]
D augmented.
[MUSIC]
That's D, F-sharp, A-sharp,
D, F-sharp, and D diminished.
[MUSIC]
D diminished,
you can do that a lot of different ways.
[MUSIC]
Or, I'm cheating,
I'm going to thumb position.
Here we go.
[MUSIC]
There.
[MUSIC]
D diminished.
D seven, one, three, five, flat seven.
[MUSIC]
One, three, flat seven.
[MUSIC]
D, F-sharp, A, C.
Now with the nine and the plus eleven.
[MUSIC]
So that's D,
you can do it this way too.
D, F-sharp, A, C.
[MUSIC]
E, G-sharp, E,
C, A, F-sharp, D.
[MUSIC]
[MUSIC]

B flat.
D flat.
F.
[SOUND] That's the A flat on top.
[SOUND]
F.
[SOUND] D flat.
[SOUND] B flat.
[SOUND] G flat.
[SOUND] E flat.
Then E flat minor seven flat five
plus with the nine, plus 11.
Not a plus 11.
It's E flat minor seven flat five,
with the nine and the 11.
[MUSIC].
Make sure have that good A there,
E flat, G flat, A, B flat.
F.
A flat.
F, D flat, A natural,
G flat, E flat.
Then there's E flat augmented.
[MUSIC]
E flat,
G, B, E flat, G.
Sometimes we can use an open
string to climb a position.
Check this out.
We go E flat, G, B.
[MUSIC]
It gives us a chance to shift while
the open string is ringing.
[MUSIC].
Okay?
E flat diminished.
[MUSIC]
That's E flat,
F-sharp, A,
C E flat, F sharp, A.
You can do it from down here
[MUSIC]
or.
[MUSIC]
Okay, E flat seven.
[MUSIC]
That's one, three, five, flat seven.
E flat, G, B flat, D flat.
And E flat, G, B flat, D flat, and
now with the nine F, and with the plus 11.
[MUSIC]
And that's
the arpeggios.
[MUSIC]
