So now we're gonna get into materials.
Pencils are obviously one of the most
basic necessities of any artist.
It's one of those things that you know, if
you're,
if you're a stand up bass player or if
you're a a violinist or
a pianist, you can't just travel anywhere
with your piano.
You can't just travel anywhere with a
stand up bass.
But you can travel everywhere with this.
The pencil is the best tool ever.
You don't need, you can paint with your
pencil.
You can draw fine details with your
pencil.
You can do anything.
You sketch landscapes and people and still
lives,
and self-portraits, drawn on napkins, draw
on paper, draw on the airplane.
Just with this little device.
And it goes through security as well.
There you go.
You don't get dinged at security.
So I'm gonna get into a little bit of
pencils and
what I like to draw with because you might
have different kinds of pencils.
But I'm gonna discuss the entire array.
So, my favorite pencil is the number two.
It's, it's the, it's like the HB.
The classic pencil, the pencil we all know
from being kids in school, and
the reason I like it, is because, it's got
a decent softness to it, like that.
And you can go really dark as well, like
this.
So depending on how much pressure you
apply, it's actually pretty decent.
And you can get, as you could see here,
get really soft edge like that.
And you could erase it and fade it.
And it's got a, it's, it's got a lot of,
dimension to it.
And it's kinda weird to think about it
that way, but it really does.
It has a lot of variety to this pencil.
So, let's get into the array of pencils.
This is the Faber-Castell, B pencil.
I'm sorry, yeah, this is the, this is the
B.
But let's get into the HB first.
So the HB is very similar to this, to the
number two.
Cuz number two is really an HB.
H stands for hard.
B stands for black.
So as you have your HB pencil,
that's like the neutral pencil before you
get into your Hs.
It's like that in between H level.
There's like 2H, 3H, 4H, 5H.
Goes all the way up to 9H and then it
goes, it goes obviously HB.
Then it goes 2B, 3B, 4B, 5B, 6B, 7B, 8B,
9B.
So this is right in the middle and that's
where this pencil is, so they're very,
very, very similar.
Now the H stands for hardness.
The B stands for black.
So, it's your graphite to clay ratio.
So the higher you go in your Bs,
your 9B is gonna have way more black, way
more graphite.
Your 9H is gonna have way more clay, way
less graphite.
So that's how you discern with the pencils
and
you can see it because there's way more
darkness and
softness to the darker Bs as there is to
the Hs.
So let's put this down as you can see it's
pretty similar.
It's pretty similar to the school pencil,
although this brand is really interesting,
cuz it's got a,
it's got an amazing line to it, it's
really sharp.
And you start drawing with pencils enough,
you start kind of getting used to how,
you start to realize how different
everything is.
This is kind of amazing.
See that's a little harder, that's a
little softer.
And let's get into, okay, let's get into
the B.
So the B's gonna be a little darker.
[SOUND]
B's gonna be a little darker.
[SOUND] And a little softer.
So instead of like always having to adjust
one drawing,
kind of did this one drawing with just
this and a 4B.
But instead of doing that you can use your
entire assortment,
the entire B line from HB to 9B, and just
constantly be switching out pencils.
That's, that's a totally valid way to
draw.
Or you could use one and just press harder
and go softer.
Step down on the pedal.
Pull up on the pedal.
Depends how you like to draw.
So you could see here
is my B it's a little darker, a little
softer.
It doesn't have as fine a line as this H
does.
See?
It's got a much softer feeling.
Then you've got, your 2B.
Or not to be.
That's the question.
Okay, there you go.
See that?
That's way softer.
Your 2B is way softer.
And as you feel, you could feel how soft
it is, how thick it is.
I like this one.
I'm kind of a 2B, HB guy, who every once
in a while grabs a 4B.
That's my style, that's, that's how I
roll.
I'm not really a 9B guy.
If I'm gonna be a 9B guy, I'm gonna be a
painting guy.
That's so dark, I might as well be
painting.
Some of you might be 9B guys or girls,
it's not my style.
[SOUND] I love it, I could appreciate it,
I respect it.
Not for me.
[SOUND]
Although these,
this brand, you never know.
I might, I might change my mind.
Okay.
Now let's get into the 3B.
[SOUND]
Whoa.
Oh, yeah.
[SOUND] That's kind of nice.
That is kinda nice, it's like a sexiness
to this, it's like you just put it down,
it just feels, this feels like you gotta
get some Luther Vandross going,
this is like soft and nice.
It's not like.
Not, like, hard, like a, like the Hs.
It's gotta kinda sultriness.
I feel like these, this, this, this is
more, like, oh,
oh, like, just a smooth wine.
[SOUND]
4B, 4B woo,
4B, I'm digging that, 4B's kind of,
smokey.
I feel like I'm wine tasting in Napa, 4B.
Wow that's soft, smoky.
Okay, so with a 4B you're seeing way more
tooth.
See that?
You could just see how much tooth there
is.
So it feels like more, more like a smokey
feeling.
It's got that like [SOUND]
It's got a depth to it,
it's got a smokiness to it.
Maybe like a smokey wine.
5B oh, 5B.
Man, these, these are nice.
I might not be a 4B guy, I might be a 5B
guy.
I might change my mind on that one.
This is just, this is nice.
See, that's a little darker.
Mm-hm.
Very, very, very sensual these, yes.
6B, now I never really use 6B.
I'll be honest with you.
This is kinda.
[SOUND] Mm.
6B.
Okay.
Okay, 6B.
Here we go.
Here we go.
Here we go.
[SOUND]
Beautiful.
Wow, 6B.
It's, it's, it's creamy.
6B is creamy.
Let's go 7, let's go 7B.
Let's kinda move this out a little bit.
[NOISE]
7B.
Here we go.
[NOISE]
Yep,
feeling it.
Kind of like, it just feels like,
delicious.
Feels like, I don't even know, it's like
sometimes you gotta.
Look at the difference between that 7B,
and
you go over a second value it's just like
dark.
A 7B, the standard HB,
look at all that.
7B, 6B, 5B, 4B, 3B, 2B, B, HB.
That's a big difference.
All right.
Let's get into our, our, our last but not
least there.
We have an 8B here.
8B, uh-huh, whoa.
This is like, buttery.
It's like creamy.
It's coming down like olive oil.
Ooh.
Yes, that is nice.
And now, see, if I was going to do a, a
life drawing,
I would use an 8B for me because it's like
painting.
So if you, if you're more of like that
painter you wanna get that,
that edge, I'd start in with maybe a 2B
and work my way up to a, to a 8B.
This is just, this is nice.
And you can get, see you're, you're
blacks, you get just get solid blacks.
Like, if I were looking really fast I
would think, oh, is that a charcoal?
What's going on right there?
No, it's a, it's, it's like a smooth,
buttery, olive oil HB.
HB.
8B, 8B.

Okay
let's get into let's get into what an H is
like.
So, H's obviously have more clay than
graphite.
And they're, they're hard.
Look at that.
Now for me that's beautiful if you're
doing a very delicate, fine drawing.
It's got a whimsical quality to it.
It's got an airy quality.
It's like you could see a very soft
drawing with soft edges and
beautiful woman.
With hair that's super delicate and super
fine.
And the mouth is pouty and
the eyelashes and the edges are kind of
getting blown out.
That's this right here, For me.
Also you can get into a lot of like
architectural stuff with this because the,
you know, you know,
like a lot of architecture artist's they
use mechanical pencils.
But they're more in the H world.
But it's very, very hard.
So you can see the line is finer, there's
no softness and
texture like right up in here where the
8B.
It's just very much a hard pencil.
And the 2H is gonna even be harder cuz
it's gonna have more clay in it.
It's gonna be right around here.
And that's just, that's just getting like.
I feel like M.C. Escher would have liked
these because Escher was such a technical
guy, and he just really liked to play with
graphite.
Although his drawings seem pretty dark,
but I feel like he started with these.
And these are actually really good
starting pencils.
So if you're kind of just laying something
down and
doing what I call phantom strokes.
So you're actually drawingm but you're not
drawing.
You're just kind of doing phantom strokes
to get the feeling and
flavor of what you're seeing.
You could actually use these Hs because
you're doing phantom and
it's not really showing up too much on
your canvas.
So that's actually a good thing to do.
[SOUND] Just thought of that.
I'm sharing that with you.
F, F is fine, F stands for fine.
And F is kind of in its own little F
world.
And see how fine that is?
It's like, really, once again, not only
delicate, but sharp.
It's got a, like, edge to it.
So, that's an F.
So as you can see, the F is kind of in its
own little category.
Here's the H category, the F category.
But you know, you've got to really figure
out what's good for
you, what's good for you.
For me I'm more of a, I'm more of a HB,
2B, 3B guy, and now I guess I'm more of an
8B guy,
looking at this, because it's really
beautiful and creamy and buttery, and
just, it's got that richness to it, that
blackness to it, and the softness to it.
And it's more mailable too so you can work
with it like clay.
So the darker you go don't forget you can
use your fingers and kind of push in and
soften an edge and turn a form.
And that's really exciting so.
Pay attention to the pencils you're using
because they really mean something and
anybody can do this and anybody can have
fun.
And you're going to have the best time
ever with this.,.
