Now that we've learned how to pull the bow
and have good bow hold,
let's start playing some rhythms.
We'll do what's called a call and
response.
I'll do the calls and
you do the responses.
It's a common term,
maybe you already know it.
But we'll use it a lot in this curriculum.
And basically, I'm gonna play something,
and I want you to repeat it back,
as well as you can.
Okay?
So I'm gonna start some call and
response rhythms on the A string,
[MUSIC].
Ready, go
[MUSIC].
As we do this, I'll play the responses
with you so you know when to do it.
Let's try some other
rhythms,
[MUSIC].

Here's another
call
[MUSIC].

Let's try a slower one now.
How about this,

Let's try some of those same
rhythms on the D string.
I'll start where we ended,

That was two short notes and a long note.
Let's actually reverse that.
Let's try a long note and two short notes.

Let's put a couple of those together, and
we'll be using that rhythm as one of
our variations in Twinkle coming up.
It's called Run, Jimmy, Run, Jimmy.
Run Jimmy.
Let's put a couple Run Jimmys together.
It's long, short, short.

Jimmys on the G string.

Good.
It'll take a little more power on
the C string to get a good sound, but
you can work on that through
the long tones, remember.
Let's go back to the D string.
Let's see if we can do a couple
rhythms that combine multiple strings.
I'll use the D string and
the A string in this rhythm
[MUSIC].
Let's try that.
Ready, go
[MUSIC].
So we've got four notes, D, D, A, A.
Down, up, down, up.
Try it one more time after me,
[MUSIC].
Ready, go
[MUSIC].
Good.
I'm gonna do four more A strings.
Hear all eight notes and
then play it after me,
[MUSIC].

[MUSIC].
Good, I think I actually
held that last note long.
Let's try that rhythm together cuz
that's gonna set us up for Twinkle,
Twinkle, Little Star.
We'll listen one
more time,
[MUSIC].

Then we're gonna do a couple
more rhythms on the D string,
[MUSIC].
That was six short and one long.
Let's do that together.
Three, four,

Are you ready to put
everything together so far?
We've got two notes on the D string.
Then we've got four notes on
the A string and then a long A.
Then we've got six notes on
the D string and a long D.
I'll play it once and
then we'll do it together.

Good let's add a couple other strings just
to get used to playing on all the strings
of the cello.

Let me try a couple more,
using all of the strings,

Let's do the opposite.
We'll start at the top and
work our way down
[MUSIC].

Nice.
As you can see, we could just
keep making rhythms all day long.
You can even come up
with your own rhythms and
just sort of explore the sound of
the strings next to each other.
Eventually, you could try
playing strings together.
[MUSIC]
But, for now,
just focus on coming up
with different rhythms.
And in addition to playing
rhythms with your bow,
we can also dive into
the world of pizzicato.
Pizzicato is an Italian term.
That refers to the technique of just
pulling the string with your finger,
sort of your index finger
of your right hand.
Put that on the A string and
just pull it until the string releases.
That's called pizzicato or
pizz, for short, and
we could do a lot of these
rhythms pizzicato as well.
Let's just do a couple, so
we get used to it,
[MUSIC].

Let's do one more with pizzicato,
you could go back and
do all the rhythms that we already
learned on the bow, pizzicato.
How about this one last one?
