is unlocking concepts in a way that works for me. I love being able to slow down his playing of a tune until I can play up to speed, being able to loop a section of a tune and printing out dozens of transcriptions in each of the genres. I am looking forward to submitting videos of my playing and getting feedback from Mike. What a great tool! Read LessRead less about I signed up for 6 months of lessons
wrong! From my first video response I was amazed at the feedback. Mike was very encouraging and welcoming, but also wasn't afraid to point out some areas that needed work. He was able to mimic some technique issues I had and that really demonstrated the difference in sound, where otherwise I might have blown it off, it inspired me to improve.
Mike covers every genre you can put a mandolin in from bluegrass, old-time, jazz, rock and roll, classical, choro, newgrass, New Acoustic, and my favorite- DAWG!
I didn't even listen to Grisman's music when I first signed up, but I gave a couple of those lessons a try, learned more about who Mike was, and became really inspired to work on it with him. What an honor to learn that music from as close to the horse's mouth as you can. I've even learned some classical pieces and choro tunes, which I had never heard of before signing up.
I made huge progress with Mike almost right away and continue to learn and grow as a musician now 6 years later. I can't recommend it enough. Thanks Mike!! Read LessRead less about I had played mandolin for many years
sections to find what I need to work on the lesson. Why not put the appropriate transcription in the same place as the lesson so it is easy to access? Some lessons have no transcription (e.g., Blue Moon of Kentucky). The Video Exchange section is useless. They are arranged chronologically rather than by lesson. Do you really think I am going to wade through almost 800 video submissions to find something that might be interesting to me? Read LessRead less about Mike Marshall is extremely talented,
could be more flexible and who taught enough students so he/she was familiar with the thing. My nephew had signed up for banjo lessons and highly recommended ArtistWorks. I have made it through several lessons now and have learned more from Mike in those 5 lessons than I learned in six weeks in person. And, God help me, I hate those finger exercises, but they ARE good for me. As are the exercises to make sure I am hitting both strings. I am closing in on having my hand positions correct and adding a stool has helped me anchor my instrument so that it really sings when I play. And the picks! Who knew?! I now have an arsenal of them that I can change depending upon the sound I am looking for. And on top of all this, I have the flexibility I need to be able to sit down to do a lesson when it is convenient for me. And I can hit replay when I need to repeat something for clarification. So, Mike brings not only a massive amount of knowledge about the instrument, but he also offers it in a gentle and clear fashion. I have to say that I am loving the journey so far. And I feel that at some point I will be worthy of the mandolin I purchased. It’s wonderful to play and have actual music come out of it. Bravo! Thank you for all you do! eally pinpoint a variety of ways to improve your overall mandolin/music skills, both technically and aesthetically. He helps you with any style that you are interested in. I started with bluegrass and then submitted a lot of swing, jazz and pop tunes.
And during that whole journey under Mike's encouragement, I not only significantly improved my mandolin playing and improvising, but also learned to (finally) read music, transcribe songs and solos that I played by ear previously, and was introduced to some great tools and materials along the way-- like Real Books, ireal Pro and Musescore. Beyond your own VE's with Mike (which are always worth going back to), there are literally thousands of VE's submitted by others that you can go to school on. Whenever I am thinking of submitting a song, I first go to see if someone else has done a previous submission; sure enough, more often than not, there is a VE for it.
Short of playing live with other musicians, I don't think there is a better way to become a better mandolinist. I wish I could give him six or seven stars out of five. Read LessRead less about I have been an online student of
n into little mini concerts with a front row seat when Mike puts on some rhythm tracks and gets going. My own (sparse) VE have been a source of information and encouragement as well, on top of it Mike is very good answering emailed questions as well. I first became aware of Mike when I saw him In concert in Germany with the David Grisman Quartett in 1981 and was blown away by his guitar playing and his rendition of the E major prelude on Dawg's Monteleone mandolin. At the time I was still living in Germany and my mando buddies and I were buying up and trading any vinyl with his name on it. Now living in North America it is a bit ironic to take mando lessons with Mike in Germany, but fortunately the ArtistWorks format makes it possible and easy. I would give 10 starts if it was possible . Thanks Mike Read LessRead less about I have been enrolled in Mike's course
