So this aria from the St Matthew Passion
is for the leader of the second orchestra,
and it's a, it's a great solo.
The temptation is to pick a tempo either
that's too brilliant,
in other words, too fast for the character
of the aria, which is actually,
you know, the, the voice is the point of
this movement.
Either to pick a, a tempo that's too fast
for
that, or a tempo that's too slow because
the notes get quick.
We have 30 second notes.
So, we need a, a moderate tempo.
And we also need to be able to play it
with a direction,
that it doesn't sound like a etude.
So, when grabbing that opening tempo which
has slower notes,
helpful to think of faster notes later on.
[MUSIC].
And that will give you,
[MUSIC].
And that's the character.
it has that, that spoken quality, that
sung quality.
That's the melody that the singer will
come in on later.
As far as the shape, what you want is to
avoid
repetition and symmetry all the time.
[MUSIC].
So in bar five, I may go to the middle of
the bar and come away from the next bar.
[MUSIC].
But in bar six, I go through the middle of
the bar all the way to bar seven, and
then I follow the line.
It's a series.
[MUSIC].
So each time I go to the middle of the
bar, but
each one is a little less than the time
before.
And then Bach actually writes some
dynamics for you.
[MUSIC].
And that takes you to the end of this
short solo.
