5 Reasons to Give Yourself the Gift of Making Music

This Black Friday get a jump on the holidays right around the corner and scratch some gifts off the list for the musicians in your life - or for yourself! There are so many benefits that making music gives back to you. Here are a few:

A Gift That Will Last A Lifetime

By helping yourself or someone else to begin their musical journey, you are unlocking a creative, social, and confidence-building outlet that will extend far past the holiday season. Be the person who gives the gift of a lifetime!

Encourage Brain Growth

Einstein once said: “Life without playing music is inconceivable to me. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music... I get the most joy in life out of music”. And as it turns out, Einstein was onto something: In 2003, the study “Brain Structures Differ between Musicians and Non-Musicians” revealed a difference between the brain size of someone who has studied music versus someone who never has. According to the findings of neurologist Gottfried Schlaug, the brain of an adult musician had a higher volume of gray matter than that of a non-musician.

Connect with Friends, Family or Other Musicians — Virtually

While we may not be able to enjoy the company of our family and friends physically, technology can help us to stay connected. This is a perfect time to FaceTime your loved ones and play them some music to brighten their day. Or, ring up a fellow musician buddy to trade tips and skills.

Making Music Reduces Stress

Playing some tunes is just what the doctor ordered to fight the ill effects of chronic stress. Studies showing the de-stressing benefits of music-making are piling up: It reduced the prevalence of burnout in nursing students and long-term care workers, and improved the school performance and behavior of a group of inner-city, at-risk youth. Making music not just a means to an end product, but a tool for health and well-being.
