Flute Lesson: Prokofiev - Peter and the Wolf Opening

The Peter and the Wolf opening flute solo is a standard orchestral excerpt for flute auditions and competitions.

It is essentially a character study of a bird.  As good classical musicians, we perfect these pieces with a metronome.  In this case, the natural variations of a bird call can get minimized if they're played too rigid.

Flutist Jeffrey Khaner demonstrates phrasing from the excerpt in the flute lesson, advising that three pickups to the recapitulation prior to the G is important to have in your mind as you approach the piece.

This makes it sound more like a natural bird call, rather than playing it rigidly and metronomically.
