Boomerang Scratch Tutorial

In this sample scratch tutorial from QSU (http://qbertskratchuniversity.com), DJ Qbert breaks down the secret to the infamous "Boomerang" Scratch. This is just a short excerpt from the actual lesson. In the full video he goes into the history of how it was first developed by DJ Flare, as well as variations and ideas for how to incorporate it into your flow.

The Boomerang is an advanced scratch found in Qbert's curriculum (Level 3) that builds and combines concepts taught in prior levels. This is a tricky one if you don't already know the "2 Click Flare" or the "Aquaman", so it's really important to first establish that foundation.  As you'll discover with this and many other advanced scratches, the Boomerang is based on a combination of some fundamental scratch concepts and the importance of establishing this foundation is absolutely crucial in order to progress.

To master the Boomerang you need to first master the Aquaman, which is a combination of a 2 Click Flare with a Baby scratch.  Do it slow at first and don't worry if it doesn't feel natural... it's a bit like patting your head while rubbing your stomach at the same time. By using slow deliberate movements, you'll begin to train your muscles to remember the motion and it will (overtime) become easy. Be patient though, it takes time!

It's helpful to learn the Boomerang in two parts. First work on executing Aquamans using a "Forward, Backward, Forward" motion on the record to create the 3 notes. Then practice the same thing, except this time using a "Backward, Forward, Backward" motion.  Try counting the 3 notes in your head as you practice these Aquamans. Your mantra will become "one two three...one two three...one two three.."

Once that becomes comfortable, work on combining them together, and removing the pause between each Aquaman.  As your practicing, count in your head "one two three one two three one two three, etc". Over time, this will eventually will start to "click" and become second nature. You should hear a total of 6 notes in each Boomerang, with no pause between each 3 notes. In the actual lesson you can see Qbert break it down even further using Slow Motion Isolation.
