Unisons.
Here is an exercise that some
students from the Royal Academy of
Music in London showed me.
And it's a simple series of unisons.
Just a couple on each part of the kit but
you change the direction and
order of instruments so
let's consider the instrument
in this case to be snare drum,
rack tom, ride cymbal and floor tom.
Check these out.

And so
on and
so forth,
and you
can vary
the speed.
As you may have noticed,
I was flamming a few of those unisons.
That was not by choice it was just
the occasional poorly performed unison.
I do like to use flams and
I'm gonna demonstrate how to utilize
flams when you're playing in unison.
It's almost counter
Intuitive, it's unnatural
to play unisons on any
percussion instrument when
it's the same component.
Because the way the head responds
it almost doesn't feel right,
but it's more an exercise for control.
And certainly with a practice pad kit, or
if you're working on an electronic drum
set, this exercise might make more sense,
but it's just a means of getting
you used to moving around.
Utilizing both hands in the same manner,
I'm just going to do this
revelatory kind of exercise.
That's a lot of fancy words for
saying an improvisation,
utilizing unisons, as well as single
strokes and the occasional flam.
And let's see what happens.
