new skratch theory lesson

We just added new Skratch Theory lesson from Qbert called "Early Rhyme Placement". As you'll see, patterns can occur at the beginning of your flow which gives you more room to add multiple rhymes before a bar ends. Find it in the Skratch Theory section or just click here.

new layout changes

In our continued efforts to make the ArtistWorks site easier to navigate, we’ve made a few important changes based on feedback from our students. The top horizontal menu links are now your main navigation for the site. (NOTE: If you were logged in at the time of the change, you may need to 'CTRL-refresh' to see the new design.)

The Wine Country Wildfires have spared our office and studio!  Today we reassembled our work space and want to thank all of you for your kind emails, posts, texts and phone calls.  We survived!  WHEW!  We appreciate your patience and understanding during this unprecedented and harrowing situation.  We expect to be fully operational on Tuesday October 17th.

Gratefully,

Everyone at ArtistWorks

Welcome to another episode of ArtistWorks Live! This time we were joined by the one and only DJ Qbert, who's been teaching skratching online at ArtistWorks since 2009.

In case you don't already know, we do these montly live broadcasts with one of the talented teachers of ArtistWorks. Anyone with a 12 Month Membership (to any of our schools) can participate by sending in their questions/comments. It's always different but always interesting getting to know more about our teachers outside of the regular lesson content. These are hosted by our Director of Operations John Graves, tune in and see what they talked about!

Hello ArtistWorks Members,

We have posted previously that our offices were closed and we were working with a skeleton crew.  However, the physical situation in the Napa County (not just Napa City) continues to evolve and be dangerous.  We cannot, in good conscience, ask our employees to risk life and limb to work, so please be patient with us while we navigate unchartered territory.  Your online music learning experience is our number one priority as a company and we aim to meet all of your needs and answer all of your questions and concerns.  This is a time when we need your understanding and empathy.  The wildfires have us surrounded at this time and threats are coming in on all sides.  Thanks to three team members, we were able to evacuate the most valuable and important equipment our company uses. That means some of the team's computers have been "evacuated".

We have received countless emails of support and concern and thank you all for the outreach.  Our office is untouched, but the largest fire in the Napa Complex is just 2 short miles from our office.  The smoke is sickeningly thick and not possible to endure, even to sit at a desk and answer questions and phone calls.  As a result, our Customer Service team is working as best they can remotely, on personal computers while keeping themselves safe.

Justin, aka JB Wizardy, is from Norwich in the UK. He started scratching records on turntables after being inspired by the critically acclaimed Scratch documentary which came out around 2002.

As he puts it:

“I was already into music and had a drum set, but after I saw that Doug Prey movie I said to myself - I need to do this. So me and my buddy went halfs on DJ equipment, but he eventually did not get into it like me and broke away from it.“ - JB

intro to music theory

We all play music, but not everyone understands the science behind it. With music theory, musicians have a shared language to discuss and articulate ideas with other musicians. Unfortunately, not everyone learned this in school growing up (it'd be nice). Even if you do seek it out later in life, it can be hard to find a qualified music theory teacher willing to dispense all this knowledge on you (especially for free).

Lucky for anyone learning online at ArtistWorks, we've already done the work for you. We found a verifiable expert, Mr. Jonathan Coopersmith, and got him to record a whole series of music theory lessons for everyone here.

He boiled it all down to the main ingredients and has it broken up into 2 main categories: Basic Music Theory and Advanced Music Theory. Did we mention you already have access to all this in the Learn area? Read on to take the tour!

Have you been looping lately?

Looping is a powerful feature on our video player you may not even be aware of until this moment. On all the videos in the Learn area you’ll see an icon that looks like the letter “i” in a circle (it’s next to button for tagging). Click on it to initiate your Looping Control Panel:

Let’s say you’re watching a video and your teacher plays something interesting, but moves on before you have chance to figure out what it was. Just Loop it up!

Forgetting your password is a bummer. Resetting it should not be.

That’s why we recently made it a lot easier to reset your ArtistWorks password in case you ever need to. These things happen, we’ll get you through it. Go on, give it a try - we'll see you here on the other side.

upload limitis increased

Is 500 MB big enough for you? Hopefully it should be plenty so you won’t have to worry about compressing videos before uploading. You know what that means? More time to play music! Speaking of which, shouldn't you be practicing?
