The Video Exchange process is a marvelous thing. Each one captures a unique experience between student and teacher, and lives forever in the Video Exchange Archive.

1st video exchange badge

Over time this treasure trove of tips and techniques only becomes bigger and more helpful for future students. Imagine - every question you may ever have about your instrument already answered!

We recognize that it takes courage and determination to brave the waters of recording and the rocky shores of uploading. As a small token, we're giving everyone who's ever submitted a video to their teacher here a badge for their bravery. May it bestow you peace in times of turmoil.

Did you get the badge? It's not too late!

skratch theory lesson on rephrashing

Greetings! There's a new lesson to check out on Rephrashing, which is about making variations on the same theme. Instead of repeating patterns, explore other ways to say the same thing, differently. Find it in the Skratch Theory section in the Learning Channel, or just click here to check it out

30 day challenge

Hello out there! In the spirit of the new year, we have a great way to get 2017 started off right: playing more music. To keep you focused on the path to progression, there’s a new section to look out for in the Learning Channel. We’re calling it the 30 Day Challenge. Here’s how it works:

  1. 30 day challenger badgeChoose a song or technique you want to improve on this year.
  2. Record a video of yourself playing it the best to your ability and upload it to the 30 Day Challenge page.
  3. Once your teacher replies, commit to practicing every day for a month based on their feedback and other lessons in your school.
  4. On or before February 15th, upload a second video to the 30 Day Challenge area of yourself playing the same song or technique. Soon your teacher will let you know how much progress you made in the 30 Day Challenge!

Anyone who participates will get the official 30 Day Challenger badge upon submission of your second video and it'll be a great reminder for the rest of the year to keep up with your playing. Remember, anyone who practices daily is always a winner around here.

Are you in? Let the 30 Day Challenge begin!

How's it feel to be the new QSU Valedictorian?

Supaphonik: Amazing, can't believe it, I'm so honored and blessed to be this year's valedictorian. It's an achievement, and a new start.

How and when did you first get into skratching?

The very first memory I have about scratching is a song called "Mais Vous Etes Fou" by BENNY B with cuts done by DJ Daddy K, I was around 8 years old.

Working with sound samples has long been a part of modern music culture. The Sample Music Festival is the first educational music festival aimed specially for turntablism, controllerism and music production. We caught up with the founder of the festival, Alex Sonnenfeld, who has a guest lesson series at ArtistWorks on Real Instrument Skratching. This year the festival takes place in Berlin, Germany October 16-18.

What is the Sample Music Festival all about?
