meeting of styles

Today's blog is brought to you by QSU student DJ Clearcut

Meeting of Styles - Las Vegas 2012

I was recently blessed with the opportunity to DJ at the “Meeting of Styles” (MOS) 2012 - Las Vegas Art Expo. It was an exciting thing to able to get down and skratch, as well as to share musical vibes and inspirations with the artists and supporters of the MOS.

Scratch Master Tape

QSU super student Supaphonik has released what he's calling "Scratch Master Tape 2012", which is a really nice mix of beats and skraching that features a variety of ill cutters. Here's what Supaphonik writes:

Hi everybody, do you remember when scratch DJs made tapes? Back in the day, I used to listen many of those, like DJ Crazy B, DJ Mouss, Cut Killer, A-Trak, and of course Qbert.  I was nostalgic of this time so I came up with this, because nowadays nobody makes scratch tapes anymore, and it's sad!

So, there is about 40min of scratch mix featuring some cool DJs like Bjam from bucarest, Tieno, Fouks and Alroy from France, DJ Nexus from Italy, That Kid Named cCee and the one and only Qbert from the US!

Thanks to them for their contribution to the tape. Now sit back, relax, and enjoy the mix!

Handroidz

Check it out...  the Handroidz, who consist of DJ IQ and DJ Konfusion, have been holding it down in the skratch scene since 1992. These two brothers are quietly some of the dopest skratchers around, watch this routine performed at the Beat Swamp Meet last year to see for yourself.  Be sure to catch them at Skratchpad LA if you're in the area!

NI MixerHey everyone! Looks like NI is teasing a new 2 channel (it really looks like it can be a 4 channel) mixer! It looks to me like it is a straight NATIVE INSTRUMENTS mixer (makes me wonder about them and Pioneers' relationship - being that this appears to be pretty similar to the T1). I first heard about this on DJWorx which you can check out here.

Turntablism 1989We're going to take a trip now back into... NINETEEN EIGHTY NINE!

This is some nice rare footage of actual turntablism going down on MTV, featuring two of the top DJs of the day: DJ Miz and DJ Aladdin.

For those of you who remember Skratchcon, you'll enjoy seeing a young Aladdin in his prime. If only MTV was still like this!

Birdy Nam Nam

I've never seen this footage, but over 58,000 people have so I must have been sleeping. I always remembered DJ Pone's set from the DMC 2000, it wasn't much later that I heard about his group Birdy Nam Nam. Fact: me and my brother used to say that to each other after watching this movie when we were kids, long before I knew anything about DJing. It was just a random movie we rented with our parents, back when you used to rent movies on VHS. I can't NOT think about that movie whenever I see their name. Anyway, for those of who haven't seen it, enjoy this full performance from another incredible group of French DJs, Birdy Nam Nam. Turntablism is alive and well in France, just look at that packed house!
