Here's the next exercise to help
limber your tongue and disrelate the
tongue
from achieving different pitches.
What I mean by that is when you're singing
different notes,
the tongue really has nothing to do with
it.
It all has to do with the vibrations that
occur internally in your larynx.
So, a lot of singers, and you may be one
of them,
often will pull the tongue up as they're
singing higher, and
then it makes them feel like the higher
note is hard or even out of your range.
Really, what is happening to some extent
at least, is the tongue
is pulling the larynx out of position, and
that's making the note harder to get.
There is a few other elements that go into
it, but that's a really big one.
So now, you get to stick your tongue out
at me again.
[LAUGH].
>> [MUSIC].
>> And I'll show you how this goes.
>> [MUSIC].
>> I'll stick my tongue out at you first.
>> [MUSIC].
>> Okay.
So, we got the tongue out, and
we're gonna sing an through a melody
keeping that tongue out.
There's a few other things I'm gonna tell
you about this, but
I'll show it to your first.
[MUSIC]
[INAUDIBLE] Now, as you do this,
you may feel inclined either push the back
of
the tongue down through the or pull it up.
By having the tongue out, we're gonna
start, let's say,
weaving out bad habits of pulling up or
pushing down the back of the tongue, so
that you can disengage the tongue from the
achievement of different melodic notes.
[MUSIC]
[SOUND] So,
you can actually think of here.
Now you may remember in the tongue
stretches,
I told you not to push the tongue out from
the back.
That's true any time you stick your tongue
out
even if it's to somebody other than me
that you know.
But I just want you to pull it out from
the front.
Uh-huh.
Don't yank it from here.
[SOUND] And then, if it helps, which it
might,
think the in front, on, or on top of the
tongue here.
[SOUND] That will help disengage from back
here.
Now, if I was doing it wrong, it would be
like this.
[MUSIC]
I'm not gonna do it too much cuz it can
actually mess up your voice, but.
[MUSIC]
or,
[MUSIC]
That's pulling up or pushing down.
[MUSIC].
[MUSIC]
[LAUGH] Here's,
[LAUGH] here's the front part.
[MUSIC]
Or,
even think the in the front of the tongue.
[MUSIC]
Now, let's say I,
I jump a few notes here, and now you hear.
[SOUND] It's like a goose
that's been strangled.
[SOUND],
or [SOUND].
Right here.
[NOISE] It would be terrible there.
Or.
[MUSIC]
Here.
[MUSIC]
Back of the tongue is just limp.
[MUSIC]
Notice also, I'm using what I consider,
and for me just a basic conversational
volume.
I'm not trying to project.
I'm not trying to add style.
This is an exercise.
Exercises basically work through the
coordination of
the muscles involved in that particular
exercise.
So, all of these exercises end up creating
a,
a harmonious development of the parts of
your
instrument that you need to work, have
work together,
to give you the expressive voice that I'm
assuming you want.
[SOUND] All right, I think I've
demonstrated enough.
Now, we're going to get into the exercise
and I'll coach you through it.

Okay, now I'm gonna
coach you through this.
Remember if you're a guy, you're gonna be
about here.
[MUSIC]
Females, here.
[MUSIC]
'Kay, so.
Pull the tongue out from the front.
Take a breath, and we'll begin.
[MUSIC]
Uh-huh.
There's a chord.
[MUSIC]
Check the tongue, take a breath.
[MUSIC]
Good, keep that going.
[MUSIC].
Yeah.
[MUSIC]
Tongue still reaching out from the front.
Take your breath.
By keeping the tongue forward, you should
notice if you start hardening the back of
the tongue or doing something strange.
[LAUGH]
[MUSIC].
Like pulling it up or pushing it down.
'Kay, you wanna release that tongue
tension from the back.
And find out how you can sing " " without
using your tongue.
[MUSIC]
Good.
[MUSIC]
Keep that tongue out.
[MUSIC]
Holding the tongue out from the front.
[MUSIC]
Uh-huh.
And then you'll be able to relax at the
back of it.
[MUSIC]
Good.
[MUSIC]
All right.
We'll do that one again.
[MUSIC].
Yeah, keep the tongue out.
[MUSIC]
Uh-huh.
[MUSIC]
This should overall feel
relaxed not tensed or pushed.
If your voice cracks, don't worry about
it.
[MUSIC]
We're just working through things,
limbering those muscles.
We'll do a few more.
Right, tongue stays out.
[MUSIC].
Uh-huh.
[MUSIC]
Yeah, keep it going.
Two more.

Here comes the last.
[MUSIC]

you get to stick your tongue back in your
mouth.
I want you to massage right here for
a few moments, don't talk, and swallow.
Very good.
