If you do any kind of physical exercises,
you may have found that sometimes you're
asked to put your body in a certain
position and
then you work certain muscles, like your
leg let's say.
And you kind of invert it and then you do
these kicks,
I don't know if you do these sorts of
exercises, but
sometimes you have to put muscles in a
certain position and then exercise them.
And you get you get more development out
of it.
I found the voice, at times, can require
And so, I came up with this approach that
I call a trumpeted oo.
Now normally I, and you'll hear me say
throughout many lessons in this school,
that consonants are not your sound, the
vowel is and
when we're singing a song not to close
into your consonants and
crunch your vowel, thus the muscles of
your voice.
However, in this case with the trumpeted
we're going to use the muscles of the
It can get a little tiring sometimes you
have to take a break and
then go back into it.
But this will release the muscles here
inside so that as you sing,
whatever the melody is that you're
applying it to,
it exercises the internal muscles in a way
that is stress free.
Also, it gives you a physical reference
point, your lips, to think sound,
which helps you not pull up, or press down
for pitch.
So, one action, we're going to accomplish
a few different things.
And, a result will be more expansive tone
in your voice,
and a freer, easier voice to sing with.
So, please join me.
And let's use Amazing Grace.
>> Okay.
>> We're developing this, so
here's your starting note.
The first thing you're going to do is,
we'll just do it on a single note.
>> Okay.
>> And you basically reach your lips
forward, like they're a tulip or
you're trying to kiss somebody who is
across the room.
Or, oh, oh.
Uh-huh, now, we're gonna do this note
until you feel it sitting kind of
in the hole of your lips.
Not pressing out from them, but let's
start there.
>> [SOUND].
>> Good.
You're creating this little tunnel from
the middle of your lips to about here.
So, it's possible that your tongue will
scoop in the front.
[SOUND] But otherwise it will stay relaxed
inside your mouth.
It does not need to stay connected to the
back of your bottom teeth, but it,
it will just sort of be part of that
little tunnel.
Let's do it again.
>> [SOUND].
>> There.
>> Okay.
>> Yeah, okay.
Now, we're going to take this slow.
Just that.
>> [SOUND].
>> Good.
We're gonna repeat that.
And when you practice it, again you're
going to do little sections first.
Because there is a whole evolution that's
going to occur, both in terms of your
focus as well as the evolving of your
So, here.
If you think oh,
here comes that higher note.
Instead, reach your lips more forward.
>> Okay.
>> So on your, on your second note,
I want you to pull your lips a little more
forward, okay?
>> Okay.
>> All right.
>> [SOUND].
>> Good.
Do that last ooh.
>> [SOUND].
>> Good.
Keep going.
>> [MUSIC].
>> [MUSIC]
Now with lyrics.
>> Amazing Grace.
>> Yeah, like my voice is going through
I'm not sure what's happening.
>> [LAUGH].
>> I feel like puberty's going on.
>> [LAUGH] That's okay.
>> Yeah.
>> Okay, so from the beginning.
>> Amazing Grace.
>> Okay, let's just do, we're gonna add
one little thing on grace.
>> Okay, yes.
>> Stick your tongue out.
>> Okay.
>> Amazing Grace.
>> Do that again.
>> Amazing Grace.
>> Uh-huh, keep going.
>> How sweet the sound,
that saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but
now I'm found.
Was blind, but now I see.
>> [LAUGH].
>> [LAUGH] Wow, that's so different.
>> Tell me about it.
>> That feels, it feels so different than
what I'm used to,
cause I'm used to singing, trying to have
that warm,
what sounds to me inside like this
supposedly warm, big area, big area sound.
But now, it, it's, it feels much stronger,
it, it just, it feels like a different,
totally different voice then when I walked
in here.
>> Yup.
>> Wow.
>> Yup, How many minutes was that?
>> I know.
>> Okay, so if, and by her continuing
and you, it just brings you through.
It's an evolution.
It's a process that unfolds as it helps
you eliminate, without even addressing it,
you just eliminate bad habits and the
exercise itself takes over.
And regenerates your voice.
So enjoy it.
I love this, this technique.
And once again, I would love it if you,
after practicing it a bit, do a video
exchange for me.
Maybe sing of a chorus.
Then do it with an oo.
Remember do the melody slow, so you can
And you're not just off to the races and
whatever happens.
And then sing it again with lyrics.
So it's, let's say a chorus, then the
chorus with a slow oo,
and then sing it again with lyrics, and
