Dynamics, as I speak of in many
different places in the school, have so
much, and in fact everything, to do with.
What are you saying?
How are you saying it?
How do you mean it?
Getting the passion into your song and
singing it with meaning rather than.
[LAUGH] There is an expression that the
song is singing the singer
rather than the singer singing the song
and the way of turning it around, so
that you are the song.
And you're communicating it and you mean
it.
There are various steps, which I get into
later in the school.
But, because we're in this section singing
songs better, it
is definitely worth taking a look at right
here and now, which we're about to do.
So, without any further drumroll.
Michelle, please join me.
And the first thing has to do with the
subject of phrasing.
Now phrasing has to do with the
rhythmicizing
of your words, but it needs to come from.
What are you saying?
So if you were to say the first full
thought
as expressed in words in the song Amazing
Grace, what is it?
What's the first full thought as expressed
in words?
>> Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that
saved a wretch like me.
>> Yes.
So often, when I've asked somebody with
Amazing Grace,
they'll say amazing grace, how sweet the
sound.
I'm like, that's only part of the thought
there.
>> [LAUGH].
>> And they sing it that way, right?
>> Mm-hm.
>> You've probably heard that yourself.
>> Yes.
>> [MUSIC].
[LAUGH].
>> And that is always the middle of the
thought.
So good, say it for me again.
>> Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that
saved a wretch like me.
>> Good.
Now let's put a little more drama into it.
>> Okay.
>> And, so if you were really saying it,
you know,
this is a a religious song, it's a
spiritual connection,
and regardless of what anybody's personal
beliefs are,
there is a spirituality and this song can
be sung with that in mind.
That you're expressing,
if you wanna sing this song, that you're
expressing spirituality.
So-
>> Okay.
>> Yeah.
>> Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that
saved a wretch like me.
>> Mm-hm.
Now, how important is saved, in this case?
>> Oh, very important.
>> Yes.
So, if you've got.
That saved a wretch like me, they're all
pretty much the same emphasis.
So it doesn't allow the word saved to have
more importance.
>> Right.
>> They become equal value.
So how would you say it that gives saved
more predominance?
>> Of the whole line?
>> Yeah.
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound that
saved a wretch like me.
>> Good.
Now we start to have dynamics.
Just sing me that line, with that evolved
connection.
[MUSIC].
>> Okay.
That's a first step.
Now the thing about singing songs that are
traditional,
and you've heard lots of people do them
and it's become this kind of.
What I'll call static.
>> Mm-hm.
>> It's like here's the form and
then it gets passed down the ages.
And so people stop really expressing it.
>> Okay.
>> And the way that I've heard Saving,
Amazing Grace in this way.
The way that it is described is.
[MUSIC]
It's
sort of blank.
>> Mm-hm.
>> Now, you were starting to come out from
behind the curtains a bit.
>> [LAUGH].
And that's great.
So we wanna achieve a little bit more of
that.
If you're really phrasing it the way you
wanna feel it, let the rhythm change.
You don't have to take on a pre, pre, what
do you call it?
A form that's already been like given you.
>> A preset form.
>> Yeah, you can, you can let it breathe
more.
>> Okay.
Not breathe, literally.
>> Live.
>> But you know, yeah.
Okay.
>> [MUSIC]
Amazing grace,
how sweet the sound.
[MUSIC].
>> Mm-hm.
>> [MUSIC]
That saved a wretch like me.
[MUSIC].
>> Should I keep going?
>> Dude, you should feel like you're
starting.
>> I'm, I'm feeling it's like I have to
play with it more.
>> It's-
>> Just,
release, allow myself to play with it
more,
not be so concerned about being right and
accurate.
>> Hm.
>> That's what my head is saying.
>> Yes.
That's right.
That's it.
So to make a song your own involves going
through this
process as needed so that you are
breathing life into it.
And it is not telling you what to do.
You're telling it what to do.
Of course there's, you know, a, a set
rhythm.
That you need to fit your timing.
>> Yes.
>> Into, but still.
There are many more liberties that can be
taken by a singer
that bring to life the song.
So, you've got amazing grace, how sweet
the sound.
That saved a wretch, like me.
Amazing grace,
how sweet the sound.
That saved a wretch.
[MUSIC]
Like me.
That once was lost,
but now I'm found,
was blind but now.
I see.
And that's how I would sing it.
>> [LAUGH] That's beautiful.
>> Thank you.
So decide on a song for yourself.
You may already be working on one.
Take it apart.
Look at the story.
What do you want to say with it?
And if it's lyrics that you actually
can't, or
feel inhibited about communicating, don't
work with it.
Find one that feels like home to you.
