[MUSIC].
>> Well, now we're going to use a song.
There's a lot of random things that can
happen when you begin singing a song.
Of course, it's got lyrics, it's got a
melody.
It's, hopefully, [LAUGH] it's got rhythm
phrasing,
where to breathe and then you add other
singers and
the randomness of elements becomes
increased.
So once again, we're going to take this
logically.
I hope that's okay.
[LAUGH] And and take it step by step.
And the first step in bringing on other
singers.
And again, this is not, you know, you
jumping in in a jam and everybody sort of
scatters around what part to sing and
stuff and hopefully it all works out.
I mean, that's for fun, which is fun.
But if you want to put together a song and
have it really presented well and
learn your harmony parts, that's what
we're addressing right now.
And getting you so good at it that you can
go to jams and open mics and
things like that sing around a campfire
and just be able to pick out
what note you're gonna sing and hold your
own and have it blend with everybody else.
So here we go.
I'm gonna bring back my singers.

[LAUGH] Okay.
So we're going to use a short section of
the song Lean on Me by Bill Withers.
More recently updated by Glee on TV and
and many other groups.
So in fact, there's a singing competition
in the US called Sing Off and
I recently heard a really cool acapella
version of this with beat box and,
and a bunch of good things.
So, it's a song that lends itself to a lot
of possibilities.
First step is to know the melody.
So we're going to use lyrics first,
cuz that's usually how people learn a
song, lyrics and melody.
And then we're gonna break it down, which
again is something that we've done
already in the singing songs better
section of the school and you've worked it
a number of different ways, but now we're
going to be a different angle on it.
So our key, [SOUND] this is the key of D
for
those of you who are also instrumentalists
[SOUND] and it's this part.
[MUSIC]
Okay?
Ready?
>> Mm-hm.
>> One, two, three with lyrics.
[MUSIC]
They're
letting me
sing somebody
too.
Because in same harmony, they won't sing
that part,
that's almost like what's called a pick up
done by the lead singer and
then the harmonies come back in if you've
got them.
So we've got the basic melody.
And now we're gonna take away the lyric,
sing it with an E and
then we get to find out if there's any
place that one or
the other of the singers or yourself.
Actually, doesn't know it uncovers any
what we'll call blemishes.
[LAUGH] And then you get to fix them,
which is very cool and
then you put the lyrics back and you're
singing the melody right on.
So.
[SOUND]
Good.
Here we go.
One, two, three.

Stop.
Okay.
So there's one little place.
I, I say stop here, because when there's
something that needs to be worked out,
it's better to catch it right away, then
just keep going.
You fix it, you drill it, you've got it,
then you continue.
Get to know the melody.
Everybody's singing the same thing.
If you're gonna color it up, add some
embellishments, things like that.
You do it later not when everybody's
learning the melody first,
cuz that'll just be too confusing.
There's always gonna be a basic melody to
a song and embellishment possibilities.
So, embellishments means to adorn,
like hanging bulbs on a Christmas tree or
putting lights in your window.
[LAUGH] But
you start with the window first or the
tree first and then you adorn it.
So this is the tree part.
All right.
Now, let's do it with lyric next.
We'll see where we're at rhythmically.
Okay.
So I come in on this myself.
[MUSIC]
Okay.
Now you're gonna sing the melody with me
on, starting from when-
>> When.
Okay.
>> One, two, three.
[MUSIC]
Okay.
So we were pretty close rhythmically.
We definitely were singing the same notes.
How were you doing?
Getting it?

is a new song for you, so you can just go
there in the study materials section,
which there's a link to if you don't know
where it is yet.
At the top of the home page of The Vocal
School and
you'll notice the lyrics that we're
singing to Lean On Me.
[LAUGH] Lean On Me.
So let's do it again.
This time, we're gonna do it a bit slower.
So, I'm gonna conduct more and the reason
why we
slow it down is to make sure that we're
all right on
target with our words and then we can
speed it up.
This would be the last thing that we'll do
as part of learning
the song towards inserting harmonies, that
would be the next step.
So here's the last step that we're on,
melody.
Okay.
Just singing melody.
You come in on, you can sing Lean On Me if
you want, but they're gonna sing,
[LAUGH] they're gonna come in on when
you're not strong.
Slower.
One, two, three.
[MUSIC]
Okay.
Now there.
See, I'm changing my note differently than
you are.
And neither are right or wrong, you just
need to have an agreement,
because that's part of what makes it a
group having
basic things that you're agreeing on and
that unites.
So, I'm going to sing my phrasing.
[MUSIC]
Good,
you.
[MUSIC]
All.
[MUSIC]
Good, again.
[MUSIC]
That's good huh?
>> Strong.
>> [LAUGH] We were strong.
Okay.
So, I'm gonna start from the beginning.
