Constructing Arpeggios: Augmented
& Diminished.
And we got two more triads to look at.
One is augmented and one is diminished.
The augmented one, when you augment
something, it's not major or minor.
If you remember,
we were talking about intervals.
Some intervals are augmented or
diminished and some are major and minor.
When we talk about augmented in chords,
we're almost always talking about
the fifth degree of the scale.
That's kind of the yeah,
and diminished as well,
that's kind of the thing that determines
using those terms in chordal terms.
What I mean is augmented in this case,
means we're going to augment the fifth
degree of the, of the chord.
And in this case, the major arpeggio was.
[SOUND] So that's the 5th, right?
One, two, three, four, five.
Okay.
So now, I'm gonna augment that,
I'm going to raise it.
[SOUND] It's an interesting sound.
[SOUND] It's like always reminds
me of back in the cartoons
if something kinda strange might be
happening, you might hear that sound.
[MUSIC]
Sneaky.
So let's do that in all,
all the positions.
[MUSIC]
And
the last
one in triads
we're gonna
do is the
diminished
triad.
Diminished chord I want to reiterate in
jazz is gonna come in very handy as a,
as an improvising tool.
Diminished chord is made up of a,
a, a minor 3rd and then followed by
another minor 3rd, because we're taking
the fifth degree down a half step.
[SOUND] So we go up a minor third,
up another minor 3rd to that note.
[SOUND] Then to get back to the root,
you have to jump up a, a tritone.
[SOUND] It's kind of a tricky fingering.
Here, here we go.
Let's do it real slow.
[MUSIC]
This is one instance where the,
the triad is much harder to play than the,
than the, than the 7th chord,
which you'll see in our next lesson.
[MUSIC]
Next
position.
[MUSIC]
This next one
is real tricky.
[MUSIC]
See that?
I had to skip out of the way there.
[SOUND] I have to get down to that,
use my first finger twice on two
different strings, it's really tricky.
[MUSIC]
Now we'll jump up to the fifth
string positions for this.
[MUSIC]
And
the last
one.
Keep position on the fifth string.
[MUSIC]
And so those are all your triadic versions
of all your triadic,
variations of your triadic arpeggios.
I promise to make it worth your while,
you will use some in, in improvisation.
Hang in there.
These are finger twisters and
that's always good for you too.
To get your fingers moving in
directions that they don't always move.
So you can always think of it just as
a nice, little aerobic exercise for
your fingers and for this hand to,
'cause you gotta skip over strings.
