[MUSIC] >> All right,
we're gonna do variation number one with our scale.
We're gonna go up three notes, and down one, back up three, down one.
So I'll explain for you, here we go.
Now, remember our hand position, your index is based on the fourth fret,
but you start with your middle.
And we're gonna go up three notes in the scale.
>> [MUSIC] >> Then we're gonna go backwards one note,
which means that we're actually gonna be on the seventh fret of our G string.
>> [MUSIC] >> And then back up three.
>> [MUSIC] >> Go down one,
which is the fourth fret of our C string.
>> [MUSIC] >> Then go back down in pitch.
>> [MUSIC] >> Shift.
>> [MUSIC] >> Then go back one note.
>> [MUSIC] >> Back one note
>> [MUSIC]
>> All right,
let's try it one more time starting on the fifth fret, here we go.
>> [MUSIC] >> Back one.
>> [MUSIC] >> Back one.
>> [MUSIC] >> Back one.
>> [MUSIC] >> And shift.
>> [MUSIC] >> Back one.
>> [MUSIC] >> Back one.
>> [MUSIC] >> Now,
let's try doing it without pausing when we go back, here we go.
>> [MUSIC]
>> Nice, now, let's try going forward
without pauses and go backward, all right.
>> [MUSIC]
>> And now, let's go backwards.
>> [MUSIC] >> Get ready for the shift to be final.
>> [MUSIC]
>> When you go backwards it's okay if you need to do a few pauses at first, but,
eventually, you do wanna not have any pauses at all.
So let me go through it one more time nice and slow without pausing.
>> [MUSIC]
>> Backward.
>> [MUSIC]
>> [MUSIC]
[MUSIC] All right,
now we're going to do another variation.
We're actually going to be going up in thirds.
So this one is a lot of fun and you're gonna end up
having to do a little bit of thinking ahead when it's time to do your shift.
So we're gonna start on the same place which is [SOUND]
on the fifth fret of your G string.
So we start here [SOUND] and instead of going to the second note we're gonna go to
the third note of the scale which is on the C string on the fourth fret.
[SOUND] All right, so it's the fifth fret of your G, [SOUND] fourth fret C.
[SOUND] Next, we're actually gonna go to the second note of
the scale which is on the seventh fret of the G string.
So lets try those three notes.
[SOUND] Nice, one more time.
[SOUND] All right, the next one is going to be on the fifth fret of the C string.
So lets try those four notes.
[SOUND] All right,
after that one, you're going to have the fourth fret again,
[SOUND] being played, and then you're gonna go to the seventh fret.
[SOUND] So let's try those.
[MUSIC] Nice.
Then we're gonna go back to the [SOUND] fifth fret of the C string.
Now, here's where you're gonna need to think about your shift.
Cuz you're gonna end up going over here [SOUND] to this fifth fret.
So, [MUSIC]
I actually put my index down here.
So, and remember, right now when I just showed you,
I had my index away just to make it easier to see.
But you do still wanna have that nice hold that Craig and
I have been talking about where it's resting on your index.
All right, so let's try up to the shifting point.
[MUSIC] All right, then,
instead of using your pinky to go back to this note,
you can actually use your ring finger to go back
to the note on the seventh fret of the C string.
[SOUND] And then I actually have it come across,
[SOUND] and you can either lay it down for that time being or pick it up.
[SOUND] All right, let's try it up to that point.
[MUSIC] Then we're gonna down to the fifth fret,
[SOUND] and go to the pinky.
[SOUND] And then to the ring.
[SOUND] And we actually get to play a note on the A string.
We're gonna jump over here and just [SOUND] to finish it off,
jump up to the fifth fret of the A [SOUND] and in with our pinky on the seventh fret.
So let's try that from the top.
[MUSIC] The A string, pinky.
Nice.
All right we're
gonna go through
it and I'm gonna try to let you know what I'm doing as I go.
So here we go.
So fifth fret, G string.
[SOUND] Then fourth fret, C.
[SOUND] Seventh, G.
[SOUND] Fifth fret, C.
[SOUND] Fourth.
[SOUND] Seventh.
[SOUND] Fifth.
[SOUND] Then fifth with the shift.
[SOUND] Seventh.
[SOUND] And then seventh with my finger going flat.
[SOUND] Fifth.
[SOUND] Eighth.
[SOUND] And seven.
[SOUND] A string, fifth fret.
[SOUND] And then pinky landing [SOUND] on the eighth fret.
All right, let's do it one more time,
this time without me talking.
Here we go.
[MUSIC] Yeah.
[MUSIC]
[MUSIC] All right, for
this next variation we are going to be using
Hammer-Ons to help us go up the scale.
So, the first ring, we only have to worry about one note being hammered on.
So remember, If you go back and you look at the variations on the high G,
Craig explains to you about Hammer-Ons.
So remember, it's not about the force at which you hammer,
it's the accuracy at which you hammer.
So, you're only gonna pluck the string once in all of these, all right?
So I don't want to see you plucking extra notes.
You're only going to pluck each string once.
So you're going to start with the fifth fret of your G string [SOUND], and
then you're going to hammer on your pinky [SOUND], hammer on your pinky [SOUND].
Nice, let's move on to the C string.
You have three notes to hammer on.
You have the fourth, the fifth.
Sorry, you have two notes to hammer on, my apologies.
You have the fifth and the seventh fret.
So you'll pluck the fourth, [SOUND] [MUSIC].
Again.
[MUSIC] Again.
[MUSIC] Let´s go back to our G string.
[MUSIC] Then move over to the C.
[MUSIC] Nice.
All right, let's look at our E string.
The string again is where we have our shift, and you're going to do the plucking
of the 5th fret, and then hammer on the seven, and hammer on the 8th.
So, it will sound like this, [MUSIC].
Again.
[MUSIC] All right, let's try to put it together.
So we pluck [SOUND], hammer.
Next string, [SOUND] hammer, hammer.
Next string [SOUND] hammer, hammer.
Let's try it without me talking.
[MUSIC] There,
one more time.
[MUSIC]
[MUSIC] All right, in this variation I'm going
to actually show you another way of doing double picking.
In the other lesson just before this,
Craig does the double picking with his thumb.
And I'm gonna show you guys a way of doing it with your index, [COUGH] and
your middle.
So for right now, lets just play the C note on our G string,
which again is that fifth fret.
[SOUND] And I want us to start with the index, so we'll do index, middle.
[SOUND] And just try to have it even, [SOUND] amount of time.
We don't wanna have, [SOUND] you wanna have an even spacing of your notes.
[SOUND] The way that I think about it is it's almost like walking, right?
So these fingers are just walking on the string.
[SOUND] That feels pretty good?
All right, let's actually try to play our scale using this.
And we're just gonna do the straight scale.
So we have fifth fret,
[SOUND] then the next note is going to be the seventh fret, [SOUND].
Then move over to the C string, [SOUND] next note, [SOUND] next note, [SOUND].
And then shift next note, [SOUND] next note, [SOUND] and then the last note.
[SOUND] Not too bad.
I gave us pause, so that you could reach it in time.
So now, let's try it without pausing, all right?
[MUSIC] Feel
pretty good?
Let's go forward and then try to go backward.
Here we go. [MUSIC]
And backward.
[MUSIC]
Nice.
So that's another way that you can do double picking using these two fingers and
utilizing your skill.
[MUSIC]
