We've talked a little bit about phrasing,
how to make phrases work come in.
Those kind of melodic phrases.
Let's go back to some of that fidley stuff
we were talking about earlier.
We went through a little bit of the
We did the Georgia Shuffle.
just a regular, just regular 16th note
Just looking for
ways to make 'em dance and move and feel
So there are some other cool patterns that
I'd like to just suggest to you
that you might want to kind of look at and
start working on.
There is, of course, the classic Orange
Blossom Special shuffle,
and that's called the Double Shuffle, and
that was actually originated, again,
by Joe Venuti, the jazz violinist who
everybody was listening to.
He was the first, pop popular violin
player to be broadcast all over
the country on the Columbia Broadcasting
Network, and so a lot of country
fiddle players got to hear Joe Venuti and
they got a lot of ideas from that guy.
And one of those ideas was that create
That double shuffle.
So, if we turn that into something very
simple without all the extra chords and
strings and everything.
If we break that down, it's just two notes
on a low string
And then one note on a high string.
so trou, groups of three notes basically.
So, that's how that goes.
It's, again, do this very slowly.
then there's a little reset at the end of
two bars of this,
and you can hear that go by if we just
hear the metronome.
We can hear this.
Here we go, one, two, three, four.
Right, so let's slow this way down.
So here we go.
It's just one, two, three and.
All right, so we're changing our string
crossing from a.
That's a down bow.
And then the second time it's upside-down.
So first time, it's a down bow to get to
the D string.
Second time, it's an up bow to get to the
So, it keeps switching back and
forth that's what makes it a little tricky
But it's a very useful thing to be able to
be, to go,
to be able to do this, easily and quickly.
You should be able to move that up slowly,
and get that up to a comfortable tempo and
that might take a while but you can do it.
I'm using a little bit of.
You can see that the arm is moving a
Trying to use the very minimal amount of
arm in order to get back and forth
If I'm doing this,
it's not gonna work very well.
You're not gonna need much.
If you get that bow just ready to hit.
You might wanna to experiment with the,
the closest you can get that bow to the
D-string, while playing the G-string.
amount of arm motion it's gonna take to
get from one string to the next,
rather than, like, being way out here.
That's gonna slow you way down,
so you wanna make sure you're really
You don't have to move that much.
then from that, there's all these other
nice little shuffles
that are sort of combinations of these
threes and twos.
There's a great one.
If you've sing this it's a little
easier to understand.
That's the Banana Game, right?
Just there was some popular song,
you didn't wanna do that one with Chuck,
that's the only thing I remember about
Doing it slow, two, three, and.
Right, so, I'll do it super slow.
then the second half of it is
Two of those threes, and then.
So, the feeling of it,
when you get it going fast it's.
So we want that kind of.
That's what we're going for.
There's also you could just do it as a.
use that second half and just run that by
And then when we start putting notes in
You can see that it can be really useful.
And so there's, gonna be a big PDF with a
couple of these all
three of those shuffles on on that that
you can download if
you wanna kinda really puzzle this out by
looking at the music, but
to be able to do it by ear and watch me
doing this is perhaps more useful.
And I think what I'd love to do is

I'd like to see you play all three
slowly with just using these
So the orange bass and
special shuffle, the double shuffle.
doesn't have to be any faster than that,
just to show me that you kind of got it.
And this is so important to be able to do
these slow at first in order to really
get it straight, before you move on to the
And then the, at least one of these other
And these things, once you get them kinda
internalized and natural, you can just go
into and out of them.
It's a real fun thing, and you can
actually write whole tunes based on it,
and there's a whole area of backup that
starts to get very clear,
and being able to play all these great
So, yeah, shuffles.
