And now, you can play
a little bit of a scale.
You playing on one and
four blow, and one and four draw.
Now, you're on two and five.
You slide that position up.
In other words,
you can take that position.
And slide it around, and get octaves.
[LAUGH] Getting out of breath.
All the way on the blow.
But when you slide the position on
the draw, other stuff starts happening.
Because if you remember the scheme of
there are more notes in the middle octave.
You have D, F, A, and B,
starting from the fourth hole.
So, that if you're just blocking out two
notes in the bottom of the harmonica,
you do have an octave D to D.
[SOUND] But all the succeeding ones,
[SOUND] you have G and
F, which is is a seventh,
[SOUND] B and A which is a seventh.
[SOUND] And so on and so forth.
D and B which is a sixth.
Remember, I was telling
you about those intervals.
So, if you wanna play,
Susannah using this tongue blocking,
you can actually play the first few
notes of the melody in octaves.
Then the next
note [SOUND] is kind of
this weird seventh,
it'll take you some
practice to do this.
Believe me I spent hours, and hours
trying to get clean tone block octaves.
But once you get it,
its like riding a bicycle,
you're never gonna forget that size of
your mouth, and where your tongue goes,
it's gonna be the most natural thing
in the world to you after a while.
Then armed with that technique,
now you can start flapping
your tongue on the harmonica.
you see, this
is a formidable
With the addition of the flapping of
the tongue, and the tongue blocking.
The hand expression,
[SOUND] and your foot.
[SOUND] You're a one man band.
You don't need any cymbals
between your knee caps.
You're really playing
a whole lot of stuff.
And you can apply that to Susannah.
the first part
of the tune.
All the chords sound pretty good.
In the middle of the tune,
they sound a little bit funny,
they're not wrong, but
if you play on a totally just intonation
harmonica, those chords will
sound a little more in tune.
Just wanted to let you know that.
This is a temper tuned instrument.
The chords sound a little funky,
but doesn't sound bad.
Now, I'm breaking
it down into slow motion.
See I'm switching breath directions,
flapping my hand, flapping the tongue.
if I want to,
I can also alternate
my feet while
Right, [SOUND] left, [SOUND] right,
[SOUND] left, [SOUND] or left, right.
And you can see that with
a minimal amount of effort,
you can create this kind of,
this complete musical universe.
