It's a Bulgarian rhythm
known as a Arotsanitsa.
So it is divided this way.
[NOISE] Two, two, three.
One two, one two, one two three.
It's got seven beats
divided into three groups.
And the simplest way to do it, if you
just do all inhaling like I started.
You can just say, [SOUND] inhale.
And then exhale.
[SOUND], whatever comes out easiest.
That's all the breath
going in one direction.
Or you could alternate between, to
the first four beats being on the in and
the last three beats being on the out.
So let's say.
That's one inhale divided into four
parts and one exhale divided into three.
Or the other way.
Or alternate, in, out,
in, out, in, out.
And you can pronounce any
one of a number of rhythmic syllables.
Did you see what I was doing there?
The breathing was in out in out in out,
In out in out in out and
the tongue, the mouth in
some ways dividing them.
Huka, huka, hukada.
You can do it that way or duka.
However, you prefer.
I think it's good to
practice it both ways.
But to get used to this odd time meter.
Now the easiest way to practice scales
in odd time meters is, it's very simple
because a scale, most of the scales
we play have seven notes in them.
[SOUND] Like the mixolydian mode.
Second position, which is what I'm in.
I'm doing this right
handed on the piano,
you get used to the length
of the seven.
And you learn how to
hear it on three levels,
the taka taka takita,
and the two two three,
which is pulses quick quick
slow quick quick Slow.
And this is a dance rhythm,
this is how people dance to it.
They don't dance like caterpillars do,
every single step.
They dance to the pulses,
And then you also hear
the big one [SOUND].
So you're hearing the big picture,
the medium size picture, and the small,
the individual beats.
The bar of seven.
The division of the bar into two,
two and three.
And then each eighth [NOISE] So
I'm gonna do a little
bit of improvising over
a little vamp that I made up.
And I'm gonna slow it down a little
bit here just to see what happens.
Lets do that again.
Stayed in the mode.
But I was
doing it in seven.
So this is something for those of you
that are interested in improvising and
playing in odd time meters
is a good thing to practice.
