Tanz, by Georg Fuhrmann, F-U-H-R-M-A-N-N,
is also featured in the Node Renaissance
The Renaissance Anthology of Pieces and
it's on page 23.
I've highly recommend this book.
It gives you a great overview of
Renaissance era style.
And Tanz is a, is a very good etude
actually for the right hand.
Because there's a lot of string skipping
with i and m.
It has to play a melody underneath a
circular base that
that really doesn't change in, in harmony
or, or mode, or anything.
There's just a base that goes underneath
that's played with the thumb,
thumb strokes.
And then this melody in three-four.
Is played o,
over it.
And it has this kind of effect I've
noticed with students of,
of giving them a little bit of a sensation
of having to rub their tummy and
pat their head, and then re, and reverse
it, that kind of thing.
It's a little bit like you have to split
your brain because you're doing
an alternation that feels like something
more of a duple or a double kind of feel,
with this triple, with this triple thing
going on and the thumb underneath.
So you've got the string skipping with the
thumb underneath in three-four and
the melody of course is in three-four as
But I recommend that this piece, aside
from measures five through eight,
where you can use, if you wanna use, in
measures five through eight,
a, a fingering of a-m-a-m, that's fine.
But the rest of the piece should be done
with the fingering suggested on the score,
m, i-m, i-m.
You will notice that some of the m's
cross to the i's from an upper string to a
lower string.
Which is fine and much easier for the hand
to do.
But you'll also notice that m's will cross
over to i's,
going from a lower string to an upper
Which I call, which I think of as a
backward cross.
Which, we try later on in advanced pieces
and intermediate pieces
to do the right hand fingerings in such a
way that we avoid backward crosses.
But in some instances it's unavoidable,
and this is a great study for
that actually.
You have to some, and by using m-i and
keeping your alternation going,
you're forced to actually skip a string in
a sort of a backward motion, and
that's very good for the right hand.
It get's, this, the right hand really gets
hopping around on this one.
