Minor seventh, we're gonna take the third,
we had a major third for
a major seventh, now we're gonna
flat that third and make it minor.
A minor seventh chord is built off one,
[SOUND] the flatted third.
The fifth and the flat at seventh.
That's a very root position.
Basic voicing.
If you add the ninth,
it's kind of beautiful.
It makes it kinda special.
That gives it
a sound, right?
Makes it a little more exotic.
Sometimes the 11th gets in there too.
So then you have this sound.
The F is the 11th.
The 11th,
then the 13th it's
really pretty.
So if somebody
plays that sound [SOUND] you
should be able to sing
again not pretty,
but it's there.
So [LAUGH] now you know
the minor seven with the nine,
the eleven, and the thirteen.
So when you hear that sound,
it doesn't have to be a mystery.
So let's try to hear the major
seven with the nine.
Here's the major seven with the nine.
Hear how bright that is.
And then, hear how dark this
one sounds by comparison.
Here's the major again.
Sometimes progressions go like that.
They go from major to minor so
you're going,
that's a common progression.
It's like a major 9 into a minor 9,
with the 11th.
Now, let's do one with the major
7 with the 9 and the plus 11.
And then we'll go the minor.
So that now,
you hear the difference.
And if you
have the
with the plus 11,
and then
[LAUGH] okay,
you got your 13 now.
Now, let's move on to the half
diminish sound, half diminish chords.
Let's start on D.
That's a simple
half diminished sound.
Now, what's a half diminished chord?
Let's talk about it.
A half diminished chord is a chord that
has the root, the flat three,
the flat five, and the flat seven.
I'm gonna briefly touch on the diminished
in a second, because I feel like you
need to know, why half diminished
as opposed to regular diminished,
even though we're not gonna be dealing
with diminished chords and augmented
chords in depth until a little later.
So now we're dealing with
half diminished chords.
So root, flat third,
flatted five, flat seven.
people like to
sing this scale
against the two.
You can sing this scale.
What I just did was
that's a half diminished scale.
Or what they call a Locrian scale.
Again, with the modes D half diminished
is the seventh mode of E flat major.
if you play an E flat major
scale from D to D, you get.
And that's called Locrian.
So if you have the D minor
seven flat five
practice that.
You see a basic voicing there now,
cool thing is, when you get
guys like Herbie, Hancock, and
chicken that what they add to it,
like when you add a ninth to that sound.
So, here's a sound where.
Or the 11th even.
So here.
It's really kind of pretty and
a little exotic sounding.
When you put the 9th in with
the 11th it really gets cool.
really nice.
Okay, so that's the half diminished sound.
You can sing the arpeggio.
There's with the 9,
and the 11.
It's a very cool sound.
Now, the reason why that's called
half diminished is because
a diminished chord is
only one note different.
It would be the root, the flat three,
the flat five, and
what they call a double flatted seven.
How about that?
A double flatted seventh.
[SOUND] And that's a diminished.
Okay, Remember in D minor,
this flatted seventh was C.
And they lowered it again,
so they double flatted it.
That's the suspense sound you hear in
the movies.
Right, How many times have you heard that?
A diminish chord.
So for now, we're not gonna
deal with the diminish yet,
but just so you know that it's related.
The half diminished is
related to the diminish,
and there's only one note different.
But the half diminished chord
is very important in jazz.
It's a beautiful sound, okay.
