Welcome to our advanced curriculum.
At this point we've gone
through a lot of information,
a lot of tunes and techniques and
general musicianship kind of information.
By now I would expect that you'd be really
comfortable with your tructive scales
in the majors and
minors that we've covered.
And by now you really should have
a firm grasp on how to walk,
how to outline the chords using
the cells that I've taught you,
how to have a good voice leading
in your walking lines composition.
in your walking line.
Your ears should be accustomed to
recognizing the common jazz sounds,
your majors, and your minors, and
your dominants, with some alterations.
And half-diminished chords,
and augmented chords.
You should be, this sound should
be familiar to you now and
you should also feel confidant playing
with the play along tracks that
I've provided, which even show you
some different styles of music.
There's some Brazilian styles
mixed in with some jazz styles and
you should really be enjoying and feeling
confident playing along with those.
And to the point where now you're
playing a little gig with
the guys on the play-alongs.
It feels you know like
really enjoyable and
you're loose and free and you're having
a lot of fun with the play alongs.
Also I added that little
double stop section in there.
You should begin to really work on your
sound and pitch playing double stops.
In general actually, your sound production
should be in a pretty good place
with relaxed weight and pulling.
Pulling a good sound out of the bass.
Your left hand setup
should be pretty solid.
And I also expect that now the names
of the notes are memorized
with the scales and that you can
feel comfortable going all the way
up to the octave here where
thumb position starts.
So all the way up until
the thumb position.
You know playing scales across
the bass that we should you how to do,
these kinds of things should be in
your hands and in your ears, and
you should really be concentrating on
having a beautiful sound when you play.
You should be really focused on pitch and
Your rhythmic thing should really
be stronger at this point.
Now, if you aren't ready and
you have to go back and look at some
things, it's really not a problem.
There's no shame in it.
In fact, the honesty that I want you
to develop in this whole curriculum
is an honesty that you're going
to develop your whole life.
I still go back, and I look at
the foundational things, my pitch.
I still work on my scales and
my arpeggios to make sure that I can
be free on the bass and
not have any roadblocks to my creativity.
But the building blocks are important,
so important, and the foundational ones,
even the ones that are really beginner
level or basic foundational things
need to be addressed continuously
throughout your development as a musician.
So, it's no big deal at all
if you go back and you say,
well you know my shifting has got a little
out of pocket, let me go back and
look at the shifting exercises,
let me work on some sound production,
maybe I need a little tune-up on
my ear training of the sounds.
There's that exercise with
the holding a note and
singing intervals and
all those sorts of things.
Absolutely be honest with yourself because
if you do that and you go back and
correct a few things you'll
wind up improving faster.
And that's my goal with you.
To really enable you to improve
at a faster pace by taking the time and
Sometimes you have to slow down
to speed up, that sort of thing.
So, this new section that we're going into
now, is going to be a little less linear.
In other words,
you can look at the curriculum and
go right to the things
you want to focus on.
And then if you find that you need to go
back and tune up some things before you
can make the best use of those new ideas,
well then do it, but, otherwise you can
dive right in on the things that you
really feel like you're challenged in.
This section's going to help you get
deeper into the more advanced sounds, in
other words you're going to have a better
grasp of the augmented diminished sounds.
The altered dominance and things.
You're going to get a little
bit more fluent and
feel more comfortable playing them.
And you're going to continue to
sharpen your rhythmic skills,
your groove and your expression also.
And in different styles, too.
Whether you're playing in two B,
or whether you're walking,
in different ways and we're going to
also deal with helping you work on things
sequentially and bring them up to speed.
Without becoming mechanical
in the way we approach in,
in other words I'd like to see you be able
to work on something really slowly and
gradually bring it up to speed, and
then practice it fast as well, but
be patient enough with yourself and
thorough enough with yourself to really go
with the incremental root,
and then practice it fast.
Sometimes you're going to have to practice
fast only but you can't do that until
you've done the sequential and
incremental work to get to that place.
So that's important as well.
in this section now we're going to sharpen
your musicianship skills so that you
can go on a bandstand and feel like
when you play with players, especially
playing with players better than yourself,
which is always the perfect goal to have.
This is what I try to do all the time,
so that they inspire you to grow and
get to the next place.
These skills that we're going to give
you here are going to make you stronger.
If you go on a gig, say you wind
up going on a recording session.
You're going to have a pitch ethic,
and a sound ethic, and
a time, rhythm ethic that's going
to help you do a lot better.
Or if you're the type of person who's,
you're pretty advanced, and you're not
necessarily out there giging all the time.
But you want to be as on top of your
game as possible when you play with your
friends or there are many ways
to enjoy the bass in your life.
You might be someone whose come to
the instrument a little later, but
you've been progressing really rapidly and
you're really enjoying it.
And you just want to up your game.
this is a great place to do that.
You know, we're going to do it
in a nurturing environment and
in a way that would encourage you
to develop your musicianship.
Not only technically, but
also conceptually and emotionally and
in all the ways that a well rounded
musician should be developed.
