The yawner.
So you've probably noticed
that when you yawn,
you can feel on the inside of your head,
your throat really opening up.
If anyone else does you the favor of
yawning it's very contagious stuff.
So if someone yawns in front of you,
you'll notice how frequently
you want to yawn back.
[SOUND] It is a contagious thing that
your brain sees someone else getting
more oxygen when they yawn, and so
your brain wants to get more oxygen too.
That's essentially what a yawn does.
It works great for
singers as a means of opening the throat,
so if you inhale purposefully
slowly on a yawn.
Feel the air in the back of your throat.
You can feel the inside of
your throat opening up and
you want to feel the air going all
the way through the back of your throat.
You wanna keep your jaw hanging nice and
Your tongue relaxed on the floor of
your mouth, not up behind your teeth,
or up, but drop your tongue very relaxed,
where it naturally wants to sit
on the floor of your mouth.
You wanna make sure your
shoulders are nice and low and
relaxed, and you inhale on a yawn
[NOISE] and exhale very slowly.
Keep your head and shoulders still and
relaxed, not stiff.
You don't want to engage, really,
anything else in your body.
Got a nice mountain pose
going in your base.
So, your mountain pose
base can be firm and
solid, and not soft.
In other words,
you don't wanna lock your knees.
You wanna keep your base solid but
not tight, not stressed.
And if you keep that tail bone just
ever so slightly tucked down and
forward that keeps your
abdominals engaged.
And it makes your base feel very solid and
symmetrical and
it makes it possible for the rest of
your upper body to really relax and
just kinda settle nice and strong.
So it's an inhale and a yawn.
[SOUND] Slow exhale.
And then inhale and
vocalize then as you exhale in a very
gentle way right in the soft
sweet spot of your chest voice,
or modal voice,
right in a nice easy range.
repeat again,
and as you get into
a warm condition
you can count.
You can begin to count from one to five
as you exhale just in your mind as
you're vocalizing.
Varying the pitch as you count so
that you're inhaling on a yawn,
exhaling on a vocalization and
making your exhalation last one,
two, three, four,
five as you count in your head.
Keeping your base and
your shoulders relaxed [NOISE].
I felt my break that time, I'm gonna try.
[NOISE] Felt my break again.
I can feel my throat
grabbing a little bit
as I'm exhaling so
the next time I do this,
I wanna really think
about keeping my larynx
relaxed and low.
That's the yawner.
