This segment of
level one I call Mind, or
the Thinking Singer.
So we're talking about this whole
musician approach, mind, body, spirit.
We talked about keeping
our bodies healthy, and
our instruments healthy physiologically.
Now, we're gonna get into the mental
process, the intellectual process.
And how that plays into
being an excellent vocalist.
I personally have experienced what
I call chick singer syndrome,
or for guys I think it's called
the prima donna syndrome.
Which is that little bit of stereotype or
discrimination or prejudice, that gets
in play when singers are perceived
to be less than a musician
because they're just singers.
That's the stereotype of
the rock singer guy that shows up
at rehearsal and he doesn't really
care anything about what the rest of
the players are doing he just
wants to be the star and sing.
Or the girl who shows up and
it's all about the gown and the look and
again she doesn't care about
the players or the music being made,
it's just all about being a star.
I'm sure we all know some people that
have helped feed that stereotype, but
we're not one of them,
and we're not gonna be.
Because we are approaching being
a vocalist as really being
a musician whose instrument is the voice.
So that's the idea with this segment.
We are going to talk about how you
avoid the prima donna syndrome or
the chick singer syndrome.
And basically it has everything to do
with how you approach your musicianship.
How do you perceive yourself?
Do you perceive yourself as someone who
doesn't really care about how the music is
made, you just wanna be out of
front singing in the spotlight?
That's cool, too.
You can have a lot of fun like that.
It makes karaoke night especially cool.
But if you're gonna pursue this
in any kinda professional way,
then you wanna approach
it like a musician.
You're a musician and your voice
happens to be one of your instruments.
So that's what we're talking
about in this whole segment.
We've got about 10 or
12 lessons here that all focus
on developing your intellectual and
mental processes as a musician; and
how that manifests itself in your
expressing yourself vocally.
So we want you to have style and
substance, we're going for both.
It has to do mostly with
your attitude about how you
invest yourself in learning about music.
What music is about, how it's made,
the mechanics of it.
And then practice.
Practice, practice, practice.
How do you get to Carnegie Hall?
Practice, practice, practice.
We're all heading for
Carnegie Hall in this segment.
We're going to develop a really good
practices of learning how music is made,
what makes us understand
music as a musician.
