With the same general feel as the chugga
chugga bowing, really fundamental bowing
pattern is called
the shuffle bowing pattern.
Suzuki students may know it as Run, Jimmy.
And if you say the words run,
Jimmy, run, Jimmy, run, Jimmy, and
you accent Jim,
that is the shuffle bowing.
Run, Jimmy, run, Jimmy, run, Jimmy.
On an open D it sounds
like this
Again, the primary thing that I'm
thinking about is accenting Jim,
in Suzuki we probably learned
Twinkle Twinkle Little Star accenting Run.
But for all of BlueGrass we
wanna have a strong back beat.
Let's try Run Jimmy accenting Jim up and
down the D major scale.
One, two, three, and.
one extra special
technique that I
learned from old
time music and
bluegrass music.
It's called the push.
And this is a great
technique that basically,
allows you to accent a note without
changing the bow direction.
So if I'm doing an up bow,
the push would be this.
I'm accelerating the bow and
kind of dipping a little
bit more weight into it.
To give a second's attack, watch again.
It goes up,
when we're talking about bowings and
I go like this, up.
That is indicating a push,
see if you can do an up.
Do a couple ups
Try a couple down.
The important thing is
to get it sharp enough so
that it's clear, rhythmically.
But you don't want it to be too violent
where it completely dominates
the groove like this.
That's a little too much, but
see if we can just do some down,
up, down, together.
Notice the push is actually
stronger than the bow change.
So that gives us a backbeat again.
One, two, three, four.
One, two, three, four.
One, two, three, four.
So that's the push, and actually,
the rhythm we're gonna use the push in
is a variation on the Run Jimmy, rhythm.
So because we're gonna accent Jim,
Jim happens on a down bow, and
everything else is an up bow.
So it's gonna go up, Jimmy, up, Jimmy, up,
Jimmy, up, Jimmy, up.
Gently up so
it's up down up down up down up.
Say it with me.
Up down up down up down up down up.
It sounds like this on the cello up down,
up down, up.
One, two,
three, four, five,
six, seven, eight.
So we've got a strong down bow on Jim.
And then the push on run.
Watch one more time
Up down, up down,
up down up, down, up.
Let's try this in the scale.
One, two, three, and up, down,
So that
push helps
us fill
in the
That's, even though we're
holding this long bow.
That's really the key of playing bluegrass
groove is filling in the subdivisions and
kind of having fun with the accents and
stuff but
this fundamental groove is
gonna underpin everything.
Whether you're doing the push or just.
The key is the back beats.
