When we are accompanying a bluegrass
soloist, we still want
to actually throw in
some fills to help us spur the soloist on.
We don't wanna do too much,
we don't wanna get in the way.
But I want to demonstrate with
Stony Lonesome particularly,
because there's not a lot of
chord changes in Stony Lonesome.
Doing quick little scale fills is
gonna help define the phrase lengths,
which is gonna help keep
everybody jamming along together.
So let me add some fills
to Stony Lonesome.
Two, a one, two, three and.
[MUSIC]
You can choose
to do them sort of like
at every phrase or
just maybe in the middle
of a section and
it's just you know
a really important
part of sort of helping
to keep soloist
motivated while
their playing.
The one thing you do wanna be careful with
fills is that the soloist might be doing
fills themselves, so
you particularly wanna put them in like if
the soloist is sort of like leaving
maybe a little bit of space or
holding a long note, that can give
you an opportunity to interject.
But also in a jam setting,
you got three people playing chords,
somebody else might already be doing fills
and you don't want it to get too full.
But you wanna become sensitive
to what kind of small melodic
contributions you can offer,
even when you're just playing chords.
