We're gonna talk a little bit about ear
And just making that connection between
what you're hearing,
either on a record or in your own mind.
Whistling a tune.
And how to find that on your instrument,
This is a really important part because it
what you might do when you're soloing.
And it also is a way of building
vocabulary, you know,
by learning these tunes and connecting it
to the instrument.
It's, it's just a wonderful way to
increase your musicality.
So, I'm gonna recommend that you try and
pick out tunes on the mandolin,
simple little folk songs, you know, Mary
had a Little Lamb.
Any, anything, you know, like that.
It's just it's just gonna get you sorta
then trying to find those notes, you know
on your mandolin.
Because this is how I learned, really was
of of course, it's one thing to learn a
tune from somebody.
And you're watching them play the tune and
that's a, that's a great resource.
But you're really watching their fingers
so you're doing this kind of visualization
of how the song goes.
But there's a sort of another layer of, of
music making where
your ear is really leading your fingers
and, and that's what we wanna get to.
A great resource for me was always
learning things off of, off of recordings.
I did a ton of it with LPs back in the old
days where you would
slow the LP down to half speed.
And this was a wonderful way to just kind
of slow myself down to that point where I
could here the note and find it on the
instrument, play the first three notes.
Get them memorized, then go on and keep
Whether it was a solo or a or a tune.
And there's, I mean, you're really
stealing licks here,
you're stealing tunes.
[LAUGH] But this is,
this is all fair game and it's the way we
build our own, own sound.
We're never, we're never sound exactly
But a great way to become a great musician
is to play with great musicians.
And we're very lucky today to have all
access to these recordings or
videos or what have you and to be able to
play along with your heroes and
just try to imitate them Is really an
So I, I recommend that you that.
In fact, I'm gonna, in a later a more
advanced part of the curriculum,
I'm gonna insist that you do that.
[LAUGH] So, we'll get to that later.
But I wanna encourage you to just try and
pick up [NOISE] tunes by ear.
You know just simple little song.
Find, find your favorite little tune and
see if you can find those notes.
