One, two, three, four!
[MUSIC]
We're getting some really expressive
techniques out of the guitar now, and
the technique that I'm using for this one
is brand new is called pick muting.
At least that's what I call it, and what's
happening is I've found yet
another way to mute.
We've muted with this part of our hand.
Fingertips with our thumb, and this part
of our hands, we've got lots of muting
techniques, but there's a new way of
picking, and I'm going to show it to you.
So, first of all, let me get the finished
idea in your ear,
I just wanna play this so you get an idea
of the sound.
It's very short and staccato notes,
det det det det det det, they're not long
like, they're short.
[MUSIC]
Just as short as I can make them.
Just really tight and short.
[MUSIC]
So,
I'm making this happen, mostly with the
right hand, and
I want to demonstrate that by just doing
it with an open string.
[MUSIC]
You know,
not using left hand muting at all,
obviously.
It's in the air.
[MUSIC]
So
the way this is happening, I want to, just
visually pretend this is a string,
and I do a downstroke which gets the
string vibrating.
Then I'm gonna, my pick is down here so
I'm, I'm all set to come up and
stop it with a potential upstroke.
I haven't done the upstroke yet, I've just
stopped it.
It's basically ba, so you go down and I
hit it on the bottom just to stop it.
Let me demonstrate that in real life.
Like that.
So it's a quick stop with the upstroke.
So down to get it going.
[MUSIC]
And a stop with the up.
[MUSIC]
And you can do the opposite.
You can do an upstroke.
Gets the string going,
and then since you went up, you're all
ready to stop it with the down.
And it ends up being alternate picking.
Just down, up, down, up.
But each time you're stopping the string
in between.
So it's down.
[SOUND] Up.
[SOUND] Down.
[SOUND] Up.
[SOUND] Now I must admit,
when I learned to do this I didn't think
about any of those things.
I just wanted the note to be short.
So I just sort of dug in and, and but by
dugging in, I sort of pinched it.
[MUSIC]
Like this part of my thumb,
the skin on the side of my thumb, is
touching the string as well.
That's stopping it, too.
[MUSIC]
So I'm actually,
my thumb is sort of muting all those
strings.
[MUSIC]
And
suppose I'm doing a little bit of the
thwump.
As well.
[MUSIC]
So that's a really good technique,
very expressive, very powerful, very yak,
yak, yak, yak.
[MUSIC]
Then I just added the bend to it.
[MUSIC]
The thing about the bend,
is our first note [SOUND] is a bent note.
So I have to make a guess about how far to
bend.
You know, normally I can do it by ear.
I can sort of start on the unbent note
[SOUND] and
I can bend it up until it reaches the
pitch that I want a whole step higher.
Which is [SOUND] and just sort of match
that note.
[SOUND] And I can gradually lift it until
I'm satisfied with where it is.
[SOUND]
But, with this,
[MUSIC]
the first note,
I've just started, I, I don't play it
until it's bent.
[SOUND] And so I, that, you can t, you can
t, practice it I guess by,
sort of doing this a lot.
[MUSIC]
And it's really a feel thing.
I, I don't think visually.
It's gonna be, it's gonna be helpful to,
to like a visual note.
It's really more of how the hand feels.
[MUSIC]
This is something you have to practice,
and it you know, what could be more fun
that practicing these bends?
[MUSIC]
It's a great sound, so.
I would look forward to this.
[MUSIC]
I'll be disappointed if somebody makes me
stop bending.
[MUSIC]
All right, so,
you need to practice that until you can
accurately bend it up.
[MUSIC]
And get the right pitch.
And since this is repeating.
[MUSIC]
After that first one, you can adjust.
So, it's gonna be fine.
Don't worry about it.
All right, so again we're pick muting.
[MUSIC]
Digging in.
[MUSIC]
Muting with the pick and
the side of the thumb.
And maybe a little bit of the, this part
of the hand to get the thwump.
[MUSIC]
Then installing our bend.
[MUSIC]
And then we're putting.
Our lick that we did in the last example,
at the end.
All right, so that's it.
Let's hear how it sounds.
[MUSIC] Oh love that.
Let's loop it a couple times.
I'll do it slow first.
One, two, three, four.
[MUSIC] Yeah.
[MUSIC]
Such an expressive technique, sounds good
slow.
You don't even have to speed it up, it
sounds great there.
Let's try it a little faster just to test
out the technique,
make sure that that alternate picking
[SOUND] is working, and
I should show you one more thing, this is
kind of cool.
When you bend a string, it moves, you
know, if you, you can,
you can watch it as it moves, and it even
moves as far as we are picking it.
So in a way you can almost just put your
pick, right there and
the string automatically moves.
Buy it, so you don't have to move very
much you know.
I'm barely moving the pick.
Cause the string is already coming in the
right direction,
in order to make that happen.
[MUSIC]
Cause if you look at my hand,
i'm not moving much at all.
[MUSIC]
Now let's see,
I'm experimenting with it, I want to see
if I want, if I do want to move.
[MUSIC]
Still it really works best with very
little motion because it's a combination
of a little bit of picking motion and
the string it's already moving because
you're bending it.
So it's a pretty cool technique.
All right, we're ready to put the parts
together, and let's try it.
One, two, three, four!
