would like to introduce to you string
Which is a technique that I really love
for arpeggios and, for so
many good sounds on the guitar.
And technique wise, the thing that I love
about it,
is it feels exactly like the things we've
been doing.
All we do is go to a different string.
So the patterns we've been doing where we
have a certain number of notes on
a string, like for example our very first
one had two notes on a string.
[SOUND] And then one note below it.
[SOUND] So that was our leg.
those two strings that we're playing are
right next to each other.
For string skipping, all I would do is not
play the B string and
play a note instead on the G string.
And I wanna pick out a note that I like.
In this case
I'm gonna pick that one.
Now, this is kind of a big stretch.
That's one of the things about string
skipping is it tends to
be bigger stretches.
So, I'm going to do all these string
skipping examples.
Up in a higher key.
When I do that the frets get closer
together and
you have to, you don't have to stretch as
So let's do these in E minor instead of A
minor and the first one,
is going to start with the same, you know,
the same distance of
Still a minor third,
but we don't have to stretch quite as far.
This is good.
So we're doing a G and E,.
and again,
the lick we already know is this one,
we've already practiced that a lot,
we can do nice 16th notes.
You know, if you practice it a whole lot.
You can do it very fast.
And it's a combination of pick notes and
pull offs.
The second note is a pull off.
All right.
So we worked on that already.
We had those techniques ready to go.
All we have to do is change a finger.
We've got to change, instead of,
putting our pinky there.
We're going to put it down
onto the G string, so we've skipped over,
the B-string.
It's like hello B-string, I like you, but
instead [SOUND].
I'm going to hit a note on the G string.
Now, because that's a pretty big stretch,
[SOUND] I find that my third finger is
already in position to play this top note.
So, I'm gonna re-finger it slowly.
I'm gonna actually start with my third
and then use my pinky, [SOUND] for
that bottom note.
again I want to point out the first note
is a down stroke followed by a pull off.
[SOUND] And then we hit a downstroke on
the bottom note.
the descending part of this is all
downstrokes with a pull off in the middle.
Let's try that.
See, see if we can get it quick.
We'll put some holes in it.
So just.
I think your
going get that in about two seconds.
You know, if you've done the examples
before this, this is going to be easy.
[SOUND] And that's what I found with
string skipping when I first started doing
it, its, it was already based on
techniques that I knew, and
that's my whole concept for this course.
If you start from the beginning and
go gradually through, everything is
So that, there should be no one spot where
it's like this is impossible.
You know, everything is connected, so
let's take that lick we already know.
All downstrokes,
down, down, down, down.
Just with that pull off from the middle,
giving us that extra note off for free.
Now let's see if
there's any muting issues because.
We are skipping over a string and
we don't wanna make noise with that string
we gonna control it.
This is where all the muting techniques
that we learned with our chord playing
are gonna come into play.
I can see what I'm doing already I'm using
my dual purpose finger my first
finger to play [SOUND] that E note but
also to mute out.
The B string above it.
If you look, it's just lightly touching
that string.
So, even if I accidentally brush up
against it.
it's not gonna go.
It's nice and muted out.
And, also, we're doing some accurate
picking here.
So, chances are we're not gonna hit it
But we're sort of double protected.
That note is really not going to make any
Even the G note
when I play it is a dual purpose finger,
when I'm playing the note [SOUND],
and I'm lightly touching the B string to
make sure it doesn't make any noise.
All right, so
we got those three notes down.
We're ready for more notes.
All we do is go back up.
Now, the picking on this is, a downstroke.
On that last note.
And then a up stroke.
[SOUND] There, on the E, and that
transition is really important.
So let's make sure we get it right.
We'll do it nice and slow,
and we'll stop on that E with the up
stroke, so it's our first up stroke.
Everything else is down so far.
One, two, three, four.
And I stop.
That's down, down,
up, down, down, up, down, down, up.
You got it.
I find when I play these, even though I've
practiced them a long time,
it takes me a few times through before I
really get comfortable.
And I can feel it.
I can feel at first I'm holding my breath.
But then.
It's all right.
Sounding good.
I can breathe.
I can look over here.
Look over here.
Look up.
Make us look indestructible.
Where no matter.
What happens.
You can still play it.
And bang your foot.
That's how you practice and get it where.
You could always play it and you're ready
to speed it up.
Try one more time a little faster.
Really listen to all those notes.
There was one time in there where I went
[SOUND] and I got,
[SOUND] got a note that wasn't as clear as
I wanted.
And that, that's, only the ear will tell
you that, so let's really listen.
That's better.
Nice clear.
All right.
Now, after that, that's basically all the
All we have to do is loop it now, but that
does take one more transition,
because we have to go.
We have to get back there.
Let's look at what's stroke that is.
It's a down just like it was when we
So we're going down,
down, up, down.
up, down.
As a strum that's really easy.
So you already have the motions.
It's just a matter of aiming it at the
right string.
Let's try it slowly.
One, two, three, four.
You've got it.
There we go.
So again,
my ear tells me if I don't hit it right.
And I got to, and immediately adjust my
technique so
your ear is really valuable for this.
There we go.
That's sounding good.
All right.
So that's it.
Let's just play it a little bit quicker,
and see how quick we can get this and
still have good notes and good sounds.
Three, four.
Now that's pretty cooking.
And let's have some distortion.
And again, I'm going to experiment with
playing it loud and un-muted.
And also muted and quiet, and see if I can
go between those sounds.
So one, two, three, four.
All right, so you have successfully done
string skipping.
This will lead you to so many cool things.
So, practice this core lick.
Make sure those notes sound nice and
Try it at every tempo nice and slow.
And loud.
let the audience know right where the
ending is, right where the beats are.

a one, two, three four before you play it.
