Training Dojo

In this section, you can have call and response sessions with experienced skratch djs. They'll skratch the questions, and you skratch the answers. Here, you can try to copy them or just freestyle. Try out the skratches you've learned and put them together in your own way. It's that easy!

When you get better, you can post your own call and response "sessions" for the training dojo so that others can skratch along with you too!

[MUSIC]
All right circles.
Circles are, are another way of doing a
baby but very, very smooth I guess.
[SOUND]
You're
just drawing a circle on the record, and
kind of controlling it.
Forward and back, cuz I'm bringing it back
right now.
[SOUND] Now, there you go forward, and
it's still doing the circle.
[SOUND]
So you're being really light on the record
and so, you press down as you want it to
chill or as you want it to pause and
you kinda lift up your finger, as you want
the record to move along.
So you just play around with that.
[SOUND]
And if you have nails,
you're gonna scratch the record, but we're
using skipless records here and so,
no matter what, I mean, you could do all
kinds of crazy things on these records and
it still won't, skip as much as a regular
record.
[MUSIC]
And
with the circles since it's doing babies,
you can do other stuff on the thing like
say lets do boomerang.
[MUSIC]
You could do that.
You could do what else can you do with a
baby, cuz you could transform it.
[MUSIC]
Know what I mean, you could cuz
I can't that was sloppy but, you know, I'm
just throwing different techniques out.
Let's see.
I guess you can what else can you do,
you can do original flare.
Let's try original flare.
[MUSIC]
[SOUND]
You can do I guess one clicks.
[SOUND]
Different ways of messing with the fader,
with the, with the circles, which is,
which is just babies.
And yeah.
So try that out and you know don't do it
too long.
If you do it too long overnight you get
circles under your eyes so, keep
the practicing up to where, you know, if
you don't want some rest get some sleep.
It's very important.
Actually the secret to speed, I just
learned this.
A lot of guitarists I talk to them like
how do you get fast because I always
wanted to learn how to be fast on
the turntables
[MUSIC]
The secret to speed is sleep, so
that's the secret to speed.
You know, you don't want the circles under
your eyes,
you wanna do the circles on the records.
Get a lot of sleep for speed.
