Okay, this is the A section of Red Haired
Boy that, while I was recording.
Bill playing his more melodic version,
even though there are some melodic aspects
He's, he just tried out a Scruggsier part,
just played the A part one time through
with a slightly Scruggsier aspect to it.
So I thought that was really nice and I
figured, rather then having, I was gonna
say, one way to play Red Haired Boy, but
there's a lot of variation that one way.
Here's yet, another fix on how to do it.
[SOUND] So rather than playing every
he's approximating the melody in certain
And before there was a Bill Keith, this is
how everyone would've played it
with the exception of there are like, I
say, a few melodic aspects to it.
But instead of going, [NOISE] he's going.
And then instead of going.
So something like that, just going.
[SOUND] Just doing the Cripple Creek
So he starts with a two to five flat on
the fourth string into a forward roll very
[SOUND] Ending on the index on the quarter
note, third string.
Fifth first and then.
[SOUND] A little melodic lick.
Second string, seventh fret of the fourth,
forward roll, third first.
[SOUND] Ending on the C note, quarter
Fifth fret first fret of the second
string, then fifth first.
[SOUND] So you have.
You're not bringing the thumb over
to the second string, so it feels a little
bit stronger [NOISE] on the right hand.
And then [NOISE] alternating thumb, two to
three slide roll.
[SOUND] I'm sorry.
You've already done that.
And then it goes.
Seventh fret of the fourth,
third fret of the fourth, first.
[SOUND] Third, quarter note, fifth, first.
[SOUND] And you're all ready sitting on
the third fret of the fourth string, so
he just slides up from there into a
[SOUND] Fourth, third, first, fifth,
third, quarter note, fifth, first and
then this again.
[SOUND] And then this very Scruggs
It's just a forward roll [NOISE] first.
Fifth string, second and the third fret,
index on the second fret of the first.
[SOUND] And the ring on the third fret of
the first has a quarter note.
Back to the second fret and
then a backward roll into a pull off.
then moving onto the second half of the A
or the second A part, it goes.
The first time he just starts right on
This time, he'd offsets it by two notes,
which is something Earl does a lot, the
same sort of thing.
So fourth and first, those eights notes.
[SOUND] Fourth and first,
then a two to five slide on the fourth
string into a forward roll.
And then, so this time it's going,
instead of going down.
Cuz in the second measure of the whole
tune he's going down.
Here he's going.
To the, first fret of the second string
with the thumb coming across on the second
string of the right hand.
[SOUND] And then.
You've done that already and
then the three to five slide.
Forward roll [SOUND] C note.
[SOUND] This is similar to the way he
ended the first A part.
But a little more notey, so
he has a two note lead in.
[SOUND] With a hammer on, two to three on
the second string.
[SOUND] To the first string and
then the beginning of the second the last
He add this index on the second fret of
the first string.
He then pulls of three to two.
It's a really nice little touch,
ring to index.
In the left hand.
that pull of is, equivalent to two
And it's a minstrel,
a minstrel, it's a Osborne, Osborne roll.
[SOUND] Middle index, middle thumb.
[SOUND] And then instead of just going.
[SOUND] Which he does at the end of
[SOUND] Or at the beginning of measure
eight, I should say.
[SOUND] Little bluesier.
So it's a backward roll.
First fret of the second string.
[SOUND] Third fret of the third string.
So you no longer have the major third
[NOISE] that open second string.
You have it muted, not muted exactly, but
obscured by the fact that you're hitting
the fourth note [NOISE] of the scale C.
[SOUND] One, two, three, four.
So there is no major third anymore.
[SOUND] And then you've got that flatted
Do, re, me.
But it's flatted [NOISE] at the third fret
of the third string.
[SOUND] And he bends it a little bit.
Push up that way a little bit is what I
would recommend, to the first string.
[SOUND] One, two, three, four, one.
[SOUND] So it's the first string, second,
third, first, up in third quarter note.
[SOUND] And now you're ready go go to the
[SOUND] And I put the ring on the fifth
fret of the second.
And then you would just revert back to the
And just go on from there.
So here's the whole thing.
It's a really nice other version of Red
in a Scruggsier mode with some melodics
and slow it down a little bit.
