We've just added Mike's interview with Edgar Meyer backstage at RockyGrass 2016. They sat down in the ArtistWorks mobile studio (aka the RV) to talk about ongoing projects and other musical topics relevant to both upright bass and cello players alike. They even got a surprise drop in from Sam Bush as he walked to the stage to headline the festival! Check it out in the +Music Area of the Learning Channel or just click here.

"The Streisand Sessions last week were absolutely breathtaking!  The songs, arrangements, orchestra, her voice, all magic!" - Nathan East

Nathan East is always up to something special. Just recently he was the music director for the annual Yamaha Corporate Kick-off concert where he performed with Fourplay, Kirk Whalum, Jonathan Butler, Chaka Khan, Ben Folds, and Ruben Studdard among others. Before that he was playing bass at the Ali Celebrity Fight Charity event in Phoenix with another star studded lineup which included Reba McEntire, Carrie Underwood, Brooks & Dunn, and David Foster.

And as you can see in the picture here, he's also been busy in the studio with the one and only Barbara Streisand! Recording at the Thomas Newman Scoring Stage at Fox Studios in Los Angeles, he sent us some candid photos from the studio sessions, and as he wrote to us: “She's still amazing!!” - as if there were ever a question.

John Patitucci Bass Solo: "Giant Steps"

John Patitucci plays a blistering "Giant Steps" bass solo here with Bill Stewart on drums accompanying him. This classic jazz composition was originally recorded in 1959 by John Coltrane for his album Giant Steps. A similar version of this appears on John Patitucci's 1998 album Now which also features Bill Stewart on drums, Michael Brecker and Chris Potter on tenor saxophone, and John Scofield on guitar. "Giant Steps" is known for being one of the most difficult tunes to improvise over in the Jazz Canon because of its harmonic structure, so seeing John play it so effortlessly here makes it that more impressive.

For tips and insights on how to play this great jazz tune, do a search for "Giant Steps" in Video Exchange Library - or just submit your own version to John here at ArtistWorks and he will be happy to help.
