We do these special ArtistWorks Live events once a month with one of our artists, and anyone with a 12 month membership can tune in and ask questions. This was a fun one we did recently with our jazz drum teacher Peter Erskine. Also joining us was the great symphonic drummer Bill Platt, who according to Peter has "the best hands in the business."

There were some great questions asked as always, some interesting topics discussed included jazz (of course), playing with Jaco & Weather Report, making a name for himself in the music industry, playing drums on movie scores (including the recent Oscar winning La La Land), and a whole lot more.

Enjoy it!

saxophone

How you hold your sax is important, of course. Posture is a key component for any musician when it comes down to it. But there's another important technique saxophone players need to practice: proper breathing. Also known as air support, no sax player should underestimate the need for proper breathing and abdominal support when playing.

Plainly put, if you don't have the correct air support, your playing will suffer and who wants that? Nobody, that's who.

playing jazz saxophoneMusic has this amazing power to touch a person’s heart and conjure up emotions. But not every song can do this. Only when a jazz saxophone player understands how to tap into the soul of a song can the audience really experience, or “live”, the music. That leads to a very important question – how do you infuse that level of emotion into a song?

Simply playing the notes isn’t enough. To make your sax playing become less stuffy and instead, become more natural and expressive, here are five tips you can try.

1. Know the Basics:

When first starting out, you always need to begin at the beginning. And when it comes to jazz sax chords, that means learning the basics – fingerings, posture, and more. As you become more comfortable with these basics, they will take less work and gradually become less stilted and more natural. Honing these skills will give you the starting point for learning how to express emotion in your music.
