Mike Marshall dropped by the ArtistWorks studio recently while Andy Hall was recording some more Dobro lessons. They were having a ball together discussing music and playing some tunes, and we wanted to let you all in on the fun.  Because they're not quite lessons in the sense that they're teaching you how to play the tunes, we put them in the +Music section. There's also a nice 3 part interview they did together which you can find in Special Guests (or just click here).  So click on the +Music tab up top and then on Performances & More to find the new stuff with Andy Hall!

Sam Albright has been working with wood for over 50 years.  He now works out of his solar-powered shop located near Ellenburg, Washington making mandolins.  ArtistWorks had a chance to interview this talented mandolin luthier recently, who's also a student of Mike Marshall's online mandolin lessons. Because he doesn't just build mandolins - he also plays them.

AW:  How long have you been making mandolins?

Sam:  I finished my first mandolin in 2008. Actually I just found an old mandolin neck that I started way back in Art School in about 1975. And I’ve built several electric guitars and a banjo. This is really the first production run of instruments, with the final design really worked out in advance.

savannah music festivalHello all you ArtistWorks folks! I just got back from 2 amazing educational events in Georgia and Maine, where I worked with 2 other ArtistWorks professors: Mike Marshall & Tony Trischka. The Savannah Music Festival was an enormous event that takes over the whole historic city for a month; I spent 4 days there concertizing and working with a select group of young musicians chosen for Mike's Acoustic Music Seminar there. I also performed with my group The Old-Time Kozmik Trio (Bruce Molsky, Rushad Eggleston) and as a Duo with Mike.

Then up to Maine, for the FIRST ANNUAL Maine Acoustic Festival, a similar, but much smaller festival drawing from all the super-talented youngsters playing string instruments up in that state. Sponsored partly by the wonderful regional music school 317 Main, this festival featured performances by groups playing in acoustic styles such as French-Canadian, Bluegrass, and Celtic. The long day concluded with a performance-lecture by Tony Trischka and his band (with me) on the history and music of the Banjo, drawing from the new documentary narrated by Steve Martin, Give Me The Banjo. A fantastic week! - Darol Anger
