Guess what? We just discovered a few lessons that must have gotten lost in the shuffle somewhere... because they never got uploaded before today.  Not sure how that happened, but the good news is we found them and they're now available! First up, we got another one to add to the Level Three section - it's a recap of the all the Lazer lessons: Lazer Family (be sure to study the Slow Mo too).  Next we got TWO new lesssons to add to the Skratch Theory area: Baiting the Listener and Spacing Out Skratches.  Jump on it!

Interview with Mark Katz, author of "Groove Music"

groove musicA few months ago I heard author/professor Mark Katz interviewed on Billy Jam's "Put the Needle On The Record" Radio show.  I'd heard about Groove Music  and had been meaning to read it, but it wasn't until after hearing Mark speak with Billy Jam (Hip Hop Slam) that I immediately ordered the book and proceeded to devour every page.  I like to read and am a Hip Hop DJ myself, so there was no excuse not to read this.

gold record

We had so many great battle entries for the Stabs Battle, thank you all! I guarantee you that everyone who entered has improved their stab game already, so don't get discouraged if you didn't win. There were so many good ones that Q couldn't even pick just one…  so for the first time in QSU history we have a tie: congrats go out to Mr Cerdan and Traps, you got a gold record coming your way!  Q especially liked how Mr Cerdan was handling the stabs on a fast beat, and how Traps was throwing in lots of funky triplet stab bursts. So what's next? It's time for another battle! This time we're going with… drums…

The Rules: Be the best drummer in the school.  Be creative with your drumming.  Get funky, but keep it clean.  Flip different patterns… different speeds… you can use all kind of skratch combos in your drumming, just keep it around 1 minute! Lots of great lessons on here to help you out with this - so be sure to check out Q's Drumming Section (aka Level 5), also Shortkut's Drum Tutorials here, and Alex Sonnenfeld's Drumming Tutorials here.

You have 3 weeks for this, the deadline to submit your video is Tuesday, April 2nd.

mr choc interview with dj revolution

Supreme respect to DJ Revolution for these interviews, he really goes in depth from a DJ's point of view and asks questions that DJ nerds like us want to know about. This time he sits down with one of the lesser known Beat Junkies, Mr. Choc, to talk about his early days learning how to mix, getting on the radio, and a whole lot more. This is a really insightful interview that goes into the history of the Los Angeles mixshows and DJs, including the real story behind what happened to the Fantastik 4our/Friday Night Flavas show in 2006.  Watch and learn and be sure check out all of Rev's interviews on The Cut!

Halftime Radio Show 15 year Anniversary featuring DJ Qbert

qbert on halftime radio Qbert was just in New York for the 15th Anniversary of the WNYU's Halftime Radio Show.  Hosted by DJ Eclipse and DJ Riz (two of the dopest DJs ever in my opinion), the Halftime Radio Show has been showcasing real emcees, talented DJs, and all around good Hip Hop since 1998. There's a nice collection of older shows on the Dirty Waters Blog, which I highly recommend for anyone not familiar with the great underground Hip Hop radio programs of our time (Stretch and Bobbito, Halftime Radio, CM Famalam, Future Flavors, etc...).
