Using Tablets to Read Sheet Music

From Paper to PixelsEveryone who watches my lesson videos and Video Exchange Responses knows that I use an iPad to read my sheet music. What you may not know is that I was actually one of the very first professional musicians to pioneer digital sheet music in performance, way back since 2001. In some circles, I'm known as the "paperless pianist" because I live a virtually paperless life.

One of the students here asked how she could use her tablet to draw markings on her music like I do in my Video Exchange lessons. The answer to that is a bit more complicated, because it depends on a number of factors:

1. What kind of tablet is she using?

2. What is the operating system?

3. What is the file format of the sheet music she wants to work on?

The answers to those questions will determine the best way to work with her music in a digital format - from drawing digital ink markings, to turning pages hands free, to a whole world of possibilities.

Sound confusing?

george whitty on influential jazz piano playersI was recently presented with a list of “12 Influential Jazz Piano Players” and asked to write some thoughts on each of them. This is by no means any sort of “comprehensive list of the 12 most important people…” or any such thing, but it’s a good topic for a blog post, so here we go.  I HEARTILY ENCOURAGE YOU to grab some music by these pianists (there’s a recommended CD or two next to each of them) and immerse yourself in the genius of the history of our fine art!

jazz piano coming soon

Hot on the heels of cello, we just have to let you know about another new instructor we’ve got coming soon to ArtistWorks: Jazz Piano Lessons with George Whitty. Jazz has always been an important part of our online learning, which can be traced back to the founder of ArtistWorks David Butler’s deep love for the genre. Having already covered jazz in a wide variety of instruments (guitar, bass, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, harmonica), we are thrilled to be adding an important pillar to the equation with the addition of jazz piano.

Imagine the band we could put together now! We’ll keep you posted on the ArtistWorks Jazz Supergroup album, but in the meantime be sure to get on the mailing list to be first notified about when Jazz Piano with George Whitty goes live. UPDATE: Jazz Piano with George Whitty is now available at ArtistWorks!

Please note, these options are primarily for folks in the USA, Canada, and the U.K.
