learning piano online with christie peery

I started taking piano lessons from an in-person piano teacher when I was in late elementary with my younger sister. After about two years of in-person lessons, my parents seriously considered having us stop. We loved our teacher, but the expense of the lessons became a bit costly. Also, considering that someday my other younger siblings would want learn piano, my parents knew we couldn't possibly afford to continue in-person lessons for all of us children.

Around the time when my parents were deciding whether or not to pull us from our lessons, we heard from a friend about the Online Classical Piano School with Christie Peery. Their daughter was taking piano lessons online using the unique Video Exchange Learning® system and really enjoying them. My sister and I joined ArtistWorks six months later. My parents are very pleased with their decision, and it's been over four years now.

Herbie Hancock

Here we have somebody who I would say is probably the most influential pianist of the last 50 years, and one of our all-time most extraordinary musicians.

Everything that came before him, from the jazz world to the classical world, all came together and then got kicked up several quantum leaps in Herbie’s hands. He was a child prodigy, playing with the Chicago Symphony at the age of 11, and didn’t get into jazz until early in high school, but ouch, the way he took to it from there.

Playing with people like Donald Byrd and Oliver Nelson shortly after turning 20, he joined Miles Davis’s quintet at the age of 23. Which is pretty ridiculous considering the wealth of piano talent that was out there. But right from the very start you hear that this is something incredibly special.

I’ve often thought that Herbie is the ultimate expression of the human potential:

This is video from our one and only live gig, June 11 in Evanston, IL.

The first tune, a free improvisation, starts at 8:18. I hope you all enjoy this. We made a CD of free improvs a few years ago. You can check it out here: http://balkansamba.com/recordings/first-takes/

When you play like this with the right people, some really good things can happen. I hope some of you check this out and enjoy it.

Psalms: Hyssop & Snow

My new CD is almost here! "Psalms: Hyssop & Snow" will feature 23 tracks of all-original settings from the Book of Psalms and great Hymn texts. While I've recorded many albums as a collaborative pianist, this is the first project featuring all of my own compositions - how exciting! We're getting an initial batch of 100 copies rushed in time for my recital in Santa Maria, California tonight. This will give us a chance to make sure everything sounds and looks ok before the final production run. As soon as the CD is available to the public, I'll be sure to post an announcement. In the meantime, check out this pre-mastered version of Psalm 1 as a preview, featuring Greg Wiggins on vocals, Maurice Sklar as violin soloist, Eric Uglum on mandolin and guitar, a lovely string quartet, the choir at the Healing Rooms of Santa Maria, and yours truly on the piano :) Enjoy!!
