Hey all,

This weekend I've done a few gigs and masterclasses in Germany and Switzerland. I had the pleasure of performing at Staufen Gitarren Tagen and then on the way to Bad Waldsee for the next gig, I stopped by in Zurich to do a masterclass with these fine gentlemen on the picture below.

It's been a while since I did any live performances due to a very intense schedule of producing and song writing for other artists, but it was fun and I'm looking forward doing more stuff next year both in America and Europe. Stay tuned!

Best Regards Andreas

Guitar Lessons with Andreas Oberg: Jazz Comping

In this sample lesson from his online guitar school, Andreas Oberg breaks down jazz guitar comping. An abbreviated term for accompanying, comping refers to playing the rhythm part while someone plays the lead melody or solo. Although it's not the main focus of the music, it's not something to be taken lightly. Comping is an integral part of any group performance.

It is very important to find the right balance when it comes to jazz comping. This means taking some space for yourself, but not too much - the idea is to back up the soloist while playing just enough… without it being too much. Good comping will enhance the lead guitarist and help to build up intensity in the music. Bad comping however, will distract from the melody and derail the soloist.

Understanding syncopation and where to land your strumming is a crucial aspect of jazz guitar comping. Syncopation is an art unto itself, so it is very important to learn how to use it in your jazz comping. If you just land your notes on the same standard beats every time, like quarter notes for example, it will sound extremely boring to the listener.

Hey all,

Just got back to Sweden after a fun writing camp in Palma, Mallorca with great producers and friends.

The very talented transcriber Josh Bennier from Australia, just sent me a new transcription of one of my solos. Some of you might already have checked out his work, since I posted his "My Romance" - transcription. This one is another solo from the same album that I'm featured on with the Marian Petrescu Quartet, "Thrivin’ Live At The Jazz Standard". It's my solo over the Oscar Peterson tune "Cakewalk". There are some quite fast lines in there, Josh did a great job gettin' it all down on paper. Also very nice of him to be willing to share it with the rest of us. Enjoy!

Hey,

A friend of mine just sent me this link to the transcription of my "My Romance"- guitar solo from the album Thrivin with Marian Petrescu Quartet from 2010 on Resonace Records.

The transcription was made and posted on YouTube by Josh Bennier. He did a great job on this one, it's not easy to transcribe such a solo in an accurate way. So enjoy his work and check out the solo. The score is synced with the audio in his videoclip so it's easy to stop and play it back if needed.

Also our friend and AGU-student Sergey from Ukraine did a transcription of my tune "Gee Bee" and it's now being posted on the site for you to check out.

Regards Andreas
