Mandolin Master Mike Marshall (aka MMMM) calls them finger busters in his online mandolin lessons (learn more at www.mikemarshallmandolin.com). They're valuable mandolin exercises that build up speed and strength so that when you are playing, you’ve done the work to keep your playing in the pocket and your head in the song, rather than struggling to keep up.
"When it comes to tremolos, as a mandolin player, you need to have a variety of speeds, styles and range." -Mike Marshall
Ah, the tremolo... those rapid, repeated striking of the strings which imitate the effect of a violin bow. Such a nice sound when done correctly. Tremolos are among the many ways to expand your mandolin technique and can add a lot of depth and emotion to your playing. In this video from Mike Marshall's mandolin lessons, we explore the entire mandolin using tremolos.
There's a new mandolin lesson up to help with improvising on a classic tune that we've added to the Intermediate Mandolin Section. It comes from a VE of a student improvising over "Salty Dog" - Mike's response was so thorough that we broke it out into a 2 part lesson on improvisation techniques. Find it in the Intermediate area or just click on the picture below!

Mike Marshall dropped by the ArtistWorks studio recently while Andy Hall was recording some more Dobro lessons. They were having a ball together discussing music and playing some tunes, and we wanted to let you all in on the fun. Because they're not quite lessons in the sense that they're teaching you how to play the tunes, we put them in the +Music section. There's also a nice 3 part interview they did together which you can find in Special Guests (or just click here). So click on the +Music tab up top and then on Performances & More to find the new stuff with Andy Hall!
