At the IBMA 2012 World of Bluegrass conference, the ArtistWorks Academy of Bluegrass All-star players draw quite a crowd. Bryan Sutton, Missy Raines and Darol Anger play here in the booth while Tony Trischka does three interviews with noted banjo players: Kristen Scott Benson, Mark Johnson (winner of the 2012 Steve Martin Banjo Award) and Graham Sharp (Steep Canyon Rangers).  Darol Anger taught at the fiddle clinic with Aubrey Haney and Mike Cleveland.  More fun today at the IBMA.

Doc Watson

Our bluegrass teachers have written some beautiful tributes to honor the passing of flatpicking legend Doc Watson.

Doc Watson (March 3, 1923 – May 29, 2012)

"This was Doc. When he walked on the stage the air seemed to change. The light went to a new hue. The ambience he created simply by saying hello, recognizing his fellow musicians, and introducing his tunes, gave all of us a sense of greatness. We knew we were in the presence of one of us yet someone touched by light. We somehow were being showered with it from above and it was being reflected back to Doc in some magical way. He could see us with those ears I am sure.."  - Mike Marshall

doc watson tribute

I first heard Doc's live Vanguard record with Merle in about 1970, and a couple months later was able to see him at the huge and wonderful  Zellerbach Concert Hall in Berkeley. Everyone was talking about him by that time! There was a very specific feeling associated with hearing Doc. There is an aliveness, and awareness to his playing which shocked me, and brought a sense of music as a living thing, which was a new thing for me.

Talking and playing with one of the greatest rhythmic fiddlers ever.We fiddlers now have a great interview with the incredible Brittany Haas, alumna of Republic Of Strings and current driving fierce in the phenomenal band Crooked Still. Brittany is one of the world's most rhythmic and accurate fiddlers, and her approach to bowing has to be seen to be believed.

Great tunes and informative conversation make for lots of spillover into Bluegrass, Old-time and just plain Great Fiddlin'. Brittany can be heard on Crooked Still's most recent 2 recordings and on the first two Republic of Strings CDs, as well as her own self-released classic, Brittany Haas available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/BrittanyHaas.
