The new recording...You can buy this now.

As May arrived and the Berklee College semester ended, I'm saying "farewell" to a lot of great young players who are graduatiing.  But the Artistworks Fiddle School continues 24/7: we are all constantly learning more about music all the time!

I just completed a very fun tour of the Pacific Northwest with singer-songriter Emy Phelps, and managed to do some well-received workshops during that trip as well.

I also had the chance to sit in with some good friends and a sort of musical hero, Sean Watkins, Tristan Clarridge (interviewed on this site!) and the very cool Bill Frisell… in Seattle, of course. We played a bunch of bluegrass fiddle tunes…great for us, semi-weird for Bill.

Those infamous Drones are back in tangible existence as a CD... This collection of MP4 tracks sampled at 192k contains drones of 2 tonics an octave apart and a fifth, in just intonation. Each key lasts roughly six minutes and the sequence plays through all the keys in order (the circle of 4ths starting from C).

Darol: I headed out to the fantastic Barcelona Fiddle Congress in Spain for a long weekend of fiddling... and more fiddling... February 4-8. My report from the field is now in the Fiddle School Video Message Archive for February 7, 2016.  We encountered some fantastic Spanish and international fiddling, especially the Gypsy Jazz style. While there, I met and jammed with Lluis Gomez, who studies banjo with Tony Trischka at ArtistWorks. Luis is an accomplished musician himself and also helped me out at my fiddle workshop.

Here’s a nice version of Darol Anger playing his classic fiddle tune “Ride The Wild Turkey” with Joe Walsh, Grant Gordy, and Karl Doty. This song first appeared on Darol’s debut solo album Fiddlistics back in 1979 and it’s been a jam favorite ever since. It’s also one of the tunes Darol teaches in the fiddle curriculum at ArtistWorks so be sure to check it out in the Advanced section!
