GRAMMYsWe are thrilled to have seven ArtistWorks artists nominated for GRAMMYs this year! This is definitely a record for the most nominated in a single year, although many have won in the past. We're proud of all of them and so to honor these fine musicians, here’s a look at the different albums nominated from our artists this year.

Hello Jazz Guitarists All!

I want to say HEY! Welcome all the new students, and wish everyone all the very best for the Holiday Season.

I got some very nice news for my birthday and an early Christmas present, and I want to share it with you all.

I recorded a CD  called "Jazz Funk Soul" earlier this year with my good friends Jeff Lorber (keyboards) and Everette Harp (sax),

and we found out on Friday that the album has been nominated for a Grammy in the Best Contemporary Instrumental category.

Very exciting and gratifying news indeed!

I also want to let you know that my bandmate in Fourplay and fellow ArtistWorks Professor Nathan East is also up for a Grammy in the same category!!

So wish us both luck on February 8th and may the best Professor Win!!!

Here is the LOTW written out - a simple II - V - I lick in the key of G. Hope you find it useful

Chuck Loeb's Journey to Jazz Improvisation

My trajectory towards jazz improvisation began roughly when I was about fifteen years old.

Before then I was steeped in the world of rock, blues, pop and folk music. I would teach myself guitar by listening and copying songs and licks from my favorite artists. I ruined my fair share of vinyl records this way - dragging the needle over the same spot until I got a particular phrase or chord progression under my fingers. I also took an occasional guitar lesson from local teachers, and annoyed my older sister's guitar playing friends until they would show me their licks.

But then one day I heard some music playing in the local record store. The music had the sound of a rock band, but with these other-worldly rhythms, and an amazing array of new notes!

"What is this?!?" I asked the owner of the shop. He told me it was a new record, Inner Mounting Flame by a group called The Mahavishnu Orchestra, led by the amazing guitarist John McLaughlin. I went home with a copy under my arm.

"Notes are a little like planets. They have gravity and they pull in different directions, especially in relation to each other." - Chuck Loeb+

Note: Chuck Loeb passed away in 2017. His lessons are still available through the ArtistWorks Jazz Guitar school with Chuck Loeb. If you would prefer to study Jazz Guitar with ArtistWorks Video Exchange Learning, check out lessons with Dave Stryker here

In this jazz guitar lesson from the Online Jazz Guitar School with Chuck Loeb, Chuck teaches us how to construct major and dominant arpeggios (notes played in sequence) and chords (notes played together).
