Hello Everyone!

It's been a pretty busy summer for me, between touring, production and CD releases. My collaboration CD with ArtistWorks' recent addition, saxophonist Eric Marienthal, "Bridges" dropped last Friday. It is a project I am super proud of which also features ArtistWorks jazz bass instructor John Patitucci, and I hope you guys check it out.

fourplay silverAlso -- we just mixed and mastered the Fourplay 25th Anniversary CD "Silver", and it is all set for a U.S. release in November. It features the core group of Bob James, ArtistWorks' own Nathan East, Harvey Mason and myself -- along with special guests Lee Ritenour, Larry Carlton & Kirk Whalum.

Hello All!

So I have been a little MIA the last few weeks because I have been in the middle of big move out West! I will be camping out here for a while enjoying the California sunshine and cool vibe.

I have lots of musical friends out here and will be doing a lot of production and touring from here for a while.T he look of my VEs and welcome messages is a little different now - right in front of my work station/studio.

Some of the projects that I am working on in the studio is a duo/group project with the great jazz saxophonist Eric Marienthal called "Bridges" - who is now a professor here at ArtistWorks! Please tell all your sax friends to check out his school later this year. That CD features another AW Prof: John Patitucci. I am very proud of the CD and look forward to its release later in the year as well.

We are still working on the new 25th anniversary CD of Fourplay "Silver", and mixing begins next week. Keep a look out for that!

After that work will start on the new Jazz, Funk, Soul CD.... so I am staying pretty busy!

Here is the new Lick of the Month, a little diatonic pattern with a chromatic approach note each time.

Wishing you all the very best and see you 'round campus!

Jazz Guitar Scales and Modes: What Does It All Mean?

Aspiring guitarists often hear about the importance of guitar scales for learning how to improvise. In jazz in particular, we so often hear things like "scales go with chords", "we have to practice scales", and "which scale goes with DMaj7#11(add #9)?" – but what does it all mean? To become fluent musicians and improvisers we must develop our understanding of all guitar scales to a high level, but let's first look at some fundamentals.

In the lesson called "Introduction to Constructing Scales" from the Online Jazz Guitar School with Chuck Loeb, we have a very helpful review of how guitar scales fit into the scheme of things. Chuck goes over how to build a major scale, which as he mentions, is paramount because we relate all other guitar scales to the major scale. Ex 1

On The Road Again

Hey Gang!

As the title says, I am hitting the road again this month and actually I am writing and posting this note from the Delta Airlines Lounge at LaGuardia Airport in NY heading up to Detroit to play with Fourplay tonight!

After this my travels will take me to California, Ohio, Pennsylvania, NJ, NY, Rhode Island, & Florida! I will be with Fourplay, Jazz Funk Soul, and also I am excited to be presenting the CD "BOP" which I have mentioned before. It is a great lineup of contemporary Jazz Artists playing their favorites fromthe hallowed Bop era - tunes by Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk and more. The players include Jeff Lorber, Everette Harp, Harvey Mason, Brian Bromberg, Rick Braun, Till Broenner, Eric Marienthal, Randy Brecker, Brian Dunne, and fellow AW Prof John Patitucci! We will debut it at 2 shows of Big Band concerts at The Berks Jazz Festival April 14th & 15th which is where the project was born.

The greatest thing of alll about it is that all the proceeds from the sale of the CD go to The PKDcure Foundation to find a cure for Polycystic Kidney Disease. Jeff Lorber and his family suffer from this genetic condition, and it can be very serious and even fatal. So, when you pick upyour copy you will enjoy the music AND support a great cause at the same time!

Buy it here: http://artistshare.com/v4/Projects/Experience/343/462/1/Jeff-Lorber-BOP?v=2 or on iTunes.

Here is the LOTW which deals with V7 chords inserted in a melodic line. Hope you dig it!

Have a great time with your journey to jazz guitar and please have patience with me if it takes me a while to respond to your vids.... and it may be from a hotel room or an airport ehan I do it ;-)

Seeya 'round campus,

Chuck
