It's been another busy week playing for a number of auditions and competitions with students. Spring is always a busy - and productive - time in the classical music world! One of my students just won the Philadelphia Orchestra student concerto competition - yay! Here's a view from the Kimmel Center, home of the Philadelphia Orchestra, as I was munching on some lunch getting ready to go on stage - pretty nice view, eh?

It's been a busy week for me! I'm one of the main (actually, I think I may be the ONLY main...) pianists to accompany job auditions at The Philadelphia Orchestra. One of the staff members reminded me that I've been doing this for over 20 years - wow! I've helped most of the principal players win their jobs - Concertmaster David Kim, among several others. It's always a thrill to work with some of the best musicians in the world, and even though I've played a lot of this repertoire thousands of times, I still get butterflies in my stomach when it comes time to play. When you're accompanying someone for as important a audition as a position in The Philadelphia Orchestra, you have to play as if your own job is on the line (which, in a sense, it is...), and be a solid, supportive, and - at times - calming influence for each of the applicants.

Music: The Fountain of Youth

A few weeks ago, I performed at an event honoring my 101 year old piano teacher, Eleanor Sokoloff - who is STILL teaching at The Curtis Institute of Music!, A range of students, current and prior, participated in this lovely concert honoring Mrs. Sokoloff, performing on a gorgeous Boesendorfer piano - the "50,000" model - at the Barnes Museum in Philadelphia. So, for folks who think they're too old to play or learn the piano, I say: balderdash! Mrs. Sokoloff is just one example of so many musicians I've been privileged to know who stayed mentally sharp, active, and creative well into their twilight years. If you're here learning to play for the first time, congratulations! You may have just discovered the secret to the "fountain of youth" to keep your mind healthy and happy!
