"Don’t worry, you don’t need to bring your drill - we do a lot of regular guitar playing as well.” - Paul Gilbert

Paul Gilbert is having a blast teaching people to play rock guitar online at ArtistWorks. In this video he sends out a special holiday greeting ... watch out for the drill!

New Album "I Can Destroy" Coming Soon!

Here is the CD artwork for my soon-to-be-released album, "I Can Destroy."

I discovered the artist (Barney Ibbotson) from doing some internet searching with the phrase "electric brontosaurus." Many images came up, but this was my favorite.

More internet searching led me to other dinosaurs (and even a cow) that Barney had done. I liked everything, so I contacted him to see if could make some custom artwork for my CD cover. I love the result. Many thanks to Barney!

Life Begins and Ends With the Guitar

I just finished reading the new memoir from Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders. In the spaces between all the recklessness and drug-induced tragedy, the book reveals her love of rock music and great guitar playing. She credits the original Pretenders guitarist, James Honeyman-Scott with bringing her songs to life with melody, and ends the book with one of the saddest lines that I've ever read (about her memory of him, after his passing.)

Chrissie doesn't see herself as a virtuoso guitarist, and she spent a lot of time in the early punk scene, hanging out in London with members of The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Damned, and Motorhead (more of a heavy metal band, but certainly with some punk attitude.) But in the end, she always affirms that musicians need to be able to play. I like this quote from the book (talking about "hot-shot" type guitar players.)

"They aren't paying attention to ordinary stuff... politics, religion, or society... they don't bother with opinions as those things don't concern them. Playing guitar concerns them. Life begins and ends with the guitar. That's the kind of guy you want in your band."

Rocking Photos with Neil Zlozower

I've been working on the artwork for my new CD, and that means it's time to shoot some new photos. I asked legendary rock photographer, Neil Zlozower to help me out, and he delivered stunning results as always. The shots for the album have a specific look and concept (I'm saving those until the CD comes out), but after finishing those, we did some classic "rocking out with a guitar" shots. Neil is famous (or infamous) for yelling at his subjects, and you quickly realize that he's not actually angry, he just wants to get some energy out of you, and that's one way to do it. I always look forward to the yelling, and to hanging out at his studio where the walls are covered with amazing photos of legendary musicians. Many thanks, Neil! You are 100% pure Rock and Roll!
