ArtistWorks would like to congratulate Bryan Sutton for taking home his 8th IBMA Award for Guitar Player of the Year!

We are thrilled by Bryan's accomplishments as an artist and are proud to have him teaching flatpicking guitar to students around the world alongside the other Academy of Bluegrass all-stars: Mike Marshall, Missy Raines, Darol Anger, Andy Hall, and the incomparable Tony Trischka.

So much of what we do is spent focusing on the instruction that the Academy of Bluegrass artists are providing here -- and that's obviously our mission, but in the spirit of the now concluded 2014 IBMA awards, we'd like to focus for just a moment on the impressive careers of these amazing musicians. We're very fortunate to have them all here.

For anyone who missed it, here's the full video of our recent "Mando Magic with Mike Marshall" workshop. Moderated by Scott Tichnenor of Mandolin Cafe, we were also joined by some of Mike's mandolin students as well as ArtistWorks Dobro instructor Andy Hall. We had a blast getting into some interesting mandolin related topics, and of course there was some jamming as well! Thanks to everyone who tuned in live and especially the students here who participated and helped us get the word out. See you next time!

Dobro expert Andy Hall tells us what he thinks the best Dobro songs are out there. Some of these you may be familar with while others you may not have heard before. Either way, they're all great Dobro songs that come highly reccommended by a great Dobro player. These are in no particular order and we've included Andy's notes on each one above the videos. There's also some great Dobro playing from Andy on the new Infamous Stringdusters album Let It Gowhich is now available.

We Hide and Seek - Jerry Douglas

"To me this song really defines the creative approach to modern Dobro music. Most Dobro music tends to be heavily blues based, but this embodies a more melodic, more adventurous sound."

weissenborn guitar lessonsAndy has recorded a new couple new lessons on the Weissenborn guitar, which is a special type of lap steel guitar named after the manufacturer Hermann Weissenborn in the 1920s.  In the first lesson Andy talks about the history of the Weissenborn and demonstrates the instrument's qualities.  In the second lesson he teaches a tune on the Weissenborn (tab included!).
